Best TV series endings of all time?

buffy had been steadily declining for a couple of seasons, and big parts of season 7 were a mess, but in the last couple of episodes, it came up with a really strong metaphor to end on.

How great would it have been if Mary Tyler Moore ended with her waking up next to Dick Van Dyke. (*8*)

Oh, Ro-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-ob!

The finale of that show was a real tear jerker for both the cast and the audience, I'm sure, but it was as funny as hell that they all got fired by the new owners except for Ted 'Goodnight And Good News' Baxter.

i remember the newhart ending, it was very clever...they don't make them like that anymore.....

I remember the stories going around about how the show was going to end. The most popular was that Dick was going to get bonked on the head with a golf ball, fall and smack his head, and die. The final scene was for Dick to be talking to God (George Burns). I'm glad they didn't go that route. Suzanne Pleshette was much funnier.

I found this. Bob discusses the finale and who came up with the idea for the 'dream':

I forgot about ER....damn I miss that show. I had a permanent Thursday night date for so many years....

I love how they ended it....back to work as usual.....

"So, five-card stud, nothing wild. And the sky's the limit."

Yep, definitely captured the spirit of the closeness of the crew and the Star Trek spirit very well.

a lot of people did not like it but I loved the ending of the sopranos.

maybe it's an italian thing.

I had over 40 years of my life invested in two shows..."Guiding Light" and "As the World Turns."

When they were canceled in 2009 and 2010 respectively, there was a sadness in me, because I got hooked on the two classic soaps watching them with my late mother.

GL only had months to wrap up 72 total years of history, 57 years of it on television. Considering that, they did a pretty good job. Phillip lived and got back together with Beth. Rick married Mindy. Shane married Marina. Fletcher Reade came back and swept Alexandra off her feet following the death of her brother, Alan. Ed and Holly went off on a long vacation together. Buzz married Lillian. Billy and Vanessa remarried. And, of course, Reva and Josh finally found their way back to each other. It made die-hard fans like me very satisfied and happy.

ATWT has more time (they had almost a year's notice), and I wasn't as happy with that outcome. They did a great disservice to Eileen Fulton by minimizing her participation in the final episodes. Considering she is the reason that the show had super ratings during the 1960's, and kept the show afloat, that was a slap in the face to the original grand diva of daytime! I also thought it was lame that Dr. Reid Oliver had to die to make the Luke and Noah contingency happy. Luke and Reid were awesome together. But alas, it is now all part of soap history...

I can't count the number of shows whose last episode I didn't watch. I often can't bear to say goodbye to fictional characters I so loved. As in long book series, the last book sends me to a deep melancholia every time.

So I would say, the best endings for me are when nothing ends really.

Desperate Housewives. It was nice to see them tie everything up and show the futures of the women..

Cheers was ok. The show had Def seen better days I loved NYPD Blue. It was great to see the Sipowicz character take over command.
