BET rejects airing Noah's Arc reruns

That's a shame.

My only thought is is that BET is afraid of alienating their target audience which is, of course, heterosexuals.

I don't have LOGO but I did download several episodes of "Noah's Arc" and burnt them to CD's about a year ago.

The guys are ridiculously cute. The acting? Err, just okay.

Again more evidence of how scared the black community is of homosexuality.

Although I am a fan of the show, it doesnt really surprise me that BET would reject it. Seriously, it is a network targetted at mostly heterosexual teenagers and young men. I know that sometimes MTV airs gay programs but MTV is a little more "open" to gay/bi lifestyles only because it's popular right now. I think is noah's arc was about some gay or bi african american lesbians then it would have a better chance on BET because that is less threatening to the target audience. I think the only guys who would watch it on BET are guys on the DL. Again, I think its a wonderful show, but I dont seriously think it would have great ratings on the BET network.

The MTV audience is more open BECAUSE of the gay-friendly programming MTV has put on their channel.

I think Noah's Arc would work great on the channel and know lots of women at least--that would enjoy watching it.

I thought the show was pretty lame, myself. And I think it was aimed squarely at the homosexual male. A show like Will & Grace, I think, may involve gays and gay characters, but it's not specifically targetted to a gay audience. Noah's Arc was specifically for gay males - I can't imagine it doing that great on BET.

Approaching BET with Noah's Arc was automatically a lesson in futility. There's no way this network would ever broadcast that show, even if it is a black cast. They'd had better luck shopping it to MTV or VH1 than BET.

it is sad but not suprising i mean half their programming or probably more is showing videos full of half naked women. what do you expect.

Um, if it's "popular right now", why wouldn't it be "popular right now" on BET as well?

Maybe it's more that MTV has a higher commitment to fighting for equality, civil and human rights.

BTW, the word "lifestyle" when describing the GLBT community is offensive to many, including myself.

I agree that Noah's Arc wouldn't fit BET's demo audience at all.

Yeah, only music videos that degrade black women can do that...

Admittedly, I do have issues with PK. However, I would have still slammed the posting; besides a black VJ (JJ Johnson), MTV had Prince, Donna Summer, Pointer Sisters, Grandmaster Flash, and Afrika Bambaataa in rotation in its first year. Admittedly it was mostly pale, but I would question the racism as MTV pretty much limited itself to rock in the first years, and either cutting edge music or proven stars; most black music at the time was gospel, R&B, and rpa, all three of which didn't have the wide appeal they do today. In fact, rap's market value was debated until Blondie hit #1 with Rapture (1981; one of the first videos on MTV and which arguably paved the way for the rap videos).

The "documented racism" is a joke when you look at how few groups were doing videos in the first place at that time, and most of them were European; even though Video Concert Hall had been around for a bit, which featured a wide variety of music, it was only available in certain areas. In essence, they were being done by film students and promoters that knew that they had a hit. Usually, that didn't black musicians (of course, that changed quickly enough).

So, yeah. you can say that MTV was racist; however, it was due more to lack of product than the desire to block black artists...

[Oh, and Michael Jackson was a bad example; I apologize for him (he didn't debut on MTV until 1983). I also love that one essayist made an interesting point, considering the above list: Although MTV had had black artists on before (see the above list), he noted that Michael Jackson was the first black star. Listing Rick James was also in error; in their first year or two, MTV tried to avoid the really controversial artists (Rick James wasn't seen on a lot of screens until the mid-80's due to the suggestive nature" of his videos (MTV didn't really do anything to earn its rep until Madonna came into the picture in 1983). And listing Shiela E. was just wrong (she wasn't produced until 1983)...]

What are you talking about?

First of all...it's a documented fact that MTV avoided playing music videos by black artists in its first few years on the air, feeling that they wouldn't appeal to their audience. The network executives have admitted this themselves. In MTV's first six months on the air, they had a library of 700 music videos, and less than 40 of them were of black artists. Michael Jackson, Lionel Richie, Prince (probably not as much, since in those days his music was more rock-oriented), Rick James and Sheila E. all had trouble getting their videos to run in those early days. Rick James called MTV "racist bastards" for initially rejecting his video for "Superfreak." MTV also tried to ban Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean." It took CBS Records threatening to pull ALL of their artists music videos from the network, which would have severly handicapped their playlist, if they didn't start playing Michael's for MTV to finally agree to it.

OK, all of that is good and all, so does that mean that if BET is approached again in a few years, they will give a different answer the way MTV finally relented? Let's hope so.

I am with the general consensus that the show would have suffered on BET. I think that it would have been wiser to try getting episodes shown on Bravo--unless they already tried, and failed.

Was starting to get curious when you were going to raise your racist head....Interesting that when the topic was about BET not doing something well, you weren't here. But as soon as someone says something racist, there you are...

HA HA.. you really think you are that good.. huh? Get over yourself.. you have no idea when I viewed this thread.

BET is not [snip] gay lifestyle

Ugh... there's that word again... ](*,)](*,)](*,)](*,)](*,)

I would like Noah's Arc to be shown on BET if only to inundate a lot of African Americans that most gay people don't describe their being gay as a 'lifestyle'...:mad::mad:

Maybe because it is just plain crap. They may as well digitally blacken everyone's skin on sex and the city. That's the only difference between the two shows! (j/k)
