I was going to say the same thing. Madonna has better vocal abilities; Janet has better technique. Janet is rather consistent when she sings live; however, Madonna has better natural gifts.
 
Madonna is not the greatest singer, but somehow, if she wants to, she manages to do a decent job live.
I've never heard Janet sing live, so I can't really compare.



If we're talking about voices, I like madonna's voice a trillion times more than Janet's though.
 
Janet, hands down. Janet has a very melodic voice. It's very light and pretty. Madonna....eh
 
For me the choice is easy, Madonna is a better singer.
I love Janet but a lot of times she can not be understood, just weak little sounds coming out of her mouth, can barely hear or understand her.
I saw Janet live and the music was so loud it was as if she wasn't even singing.
We saw her lips moving but could barely hear her.
Janet gets points for her sexuality on stage, Madonna is slutty, but Janet is erotic.

I prefer Madonna, but i love rhythm nation and The Velvet rope. Otherwise though I think Janet career is bland and overly sexed up. no i am not denying that Madonna's is sexed up too, but Madonna has always changed she is never a sex muffin long enough to get stale which i think has happened to Janet ever since realising 'janet' whats your opinion?

Love Madonna, but Janet is so much betta! Both are legends and have influenced music lovers and musicians alike, but Janet has been a major part of my life from birth to present.

She's been in the entertainment industry since the 70s (Good Times), starting her recording career in the 80s, kicked ass in the 90s, and looks more beautiful than ever at 42. I could compile a list of my 50 favourite JJ songs and it still wouldn't be enough!!

Rhythm Nation, janet., The Velvet Rope, and Damita Jo are her best albums IMO.

To echo the OP's opinion on her career, Janet is no doubt oversexed and somewhat bland. But her music and it's contribution to pop culture can't be denied. Don't sleep on Janet, she's a bad bitch!!

As far as who has contributed the most, I'd say it's Madonna by a sizeable margin. Janet's done a few great albums and a handful more of killer singles, but Madonna's output blows it away, methinks.

That said, Madonna's made bigger missteps than Janet's. Janet's biggest sin has been playing too safe, repeating hersef too often, and occasionally just not rising to the occasion. Madonna, on the other hand, has made some massive mistakes in her time - on the screen as well as in the recording booth. But, in a sense, that sort of fits. Madonna's always been pushing outwards. Sometimes she ends up somewhere I'm totally uninterested in following, but the fact is - she's always been pushing. That's what was so surprising about Hard Candy - it's boring. Not in a "this isn't really my cup of tea" sort of way - I may not have loved "Music", but I GOT it - but as in a "I'm phoning it in" sort of way. That sort of laziness is, well, more Janet. :)

I agree very much with you rex Janets mistake has been being in the same place for so long. That is what madonna does best she is never at the same level twice, yes she made some misteps (i hated Erotica) but she has amazing resiliance. however Janets biggest mistake has been the nip-slip her record sales have never recovered. They are both Amazing dancers but both also have relativly weak voices. Its amazing what they've been able to do with their small voices. Yes Hard candy is a hard swallow, but you have to give her credit for trying something new. Also its funny my favorite madonna album seems to be the one everyone hates. American life, i think the techno stuff is AWESOME!

Hard Candy is her last album for Warner, so she may not have put forth her best efforts -preferring to simply meet the terms of her contract...

Janet has provided some great albums and singles, bu her record company has hindered her. After Velvet Rope, they didn't promote her as they once had.

Imagine if the Superbowl thing never happened...it really could've been a totally different Janet than what we see today...*sigh* but without a doubt I give Janet this one based on still doing her thing and the kids still appreciate all the stuff she's done -- especially for dance

Madonna Hands Down.

Now, i love Janet, dont get me wrong

but madonna changes her sound style and approach almost every album, and i have so much respect for her for that, i have 95 madonna songs on my ipod, and 35 Janet songs, that really speaks for tis self. lol

Madonnas worst album imo is American life, but i still bought it, and i loved Hollywood, and Die another day

Her best record imo is Bedtime Stories.
