Below: one of 13 contributions to the Top 100 by The Supremes

It's interesting how many TLC tracks are there but not number 1.

I don't know how Billboard works. It's it sales alone or sales and airplay?

The list is skewed towards newer acts. A Supremes song in 1964 - 1969 could hit number one and have a chart run as short as 12 weeks. People bought 45s in those days the same way people digitally download today and it affected the charts in the same way, a gigantic leap in the 2nd or 3rd week.

I'm so loving this. I love that we are being so pampered by Kevin. Thanks.

Evilest, Billboard points accumulation is based on the chart positions of the singles week after week. Billboard Hot 100 is based on both airplay and sales.

Some odd inclusions. The Toys "Lover's Concerto" (one of my least favorite songs of the 60s, actually) never sounded at all like a "girl group" to me. Yes, it was fronted by a female vocalist, but there wasn't much (any?) in the way of backing vocals there. And the Bangles and Go-Go's seem rather out of place here as well - they're less "girl groups" and more "rock bands sans peni".

Shouldn't the remake of "Lady Marmalade" apply, as well? Technically, it was more a law firm than a band, but still.

Lex

By girl group it must imply that it is a group of women who record together on an ongoing basis as opposed to the vocal event that the women in the Lady remake did one time only.

Wow TLC most likely has the most good for them. I miss that group

I agree, Remote Control. It seemed the longer they continued making records, the better they got. 1999's "Fan Mail" definitely saw them at the top of their game.

I found it interesting that The Go-Go's only placed one song in the Top 100 while Bangles managed to squeeze in three ... Yet if you ask the average pop music fan which is the most popular, they'd spit out, "The Go-Go's." Hmmm.

And since I initiated this thread, let me put my one complaint in the box: Bananarama! Just one song? :(

I would have loved to have seen "Cruel Summer" and "I Heard A Rumour" make the tally. Thought it might be possible since Expose's No. 8 hit, "I'll Never Get Over You (Getting Over Me)" made the list at No. 90 ... but of course, Billboard puts hefty importance on "weeks on the chart" and the Expose song had a lot of that back in 1993.

Cruel Summer was the SHIT!!! i didn't know that Expose song was a top 10'er. i stopped having anything to do with them them after Gioia(sp) left the group. was happy to see recent performances of the original trio on youtube though.

Im Glad to see TLC on the list more than once, as i am a huge TLC fan, all their big hits are there, good for them, i do miss them th, such a shame Lisa had to die! R.I.P Lisa

I like Cruel Summer, but I have to admit that I'm a bigger fan of Ace Of Base's version of it.

This list shows how much we need some more girl groups here in the US. Most of the songs on the list were made before the year 2000. We need the Sugababes to come over here.

Their recent hit in the U.K., "About You Now" is downright thrilling.

Monrose. A German all-girl group that's scored four top 10 hits in Europe over the past year is also wild!

just watched the hottest remix EVER of "Ain't 2 Proud 2 Beg" on YouTube. never heard it before but it was tight as hell. called "3 Minutes and Counting" and just about the whole track is Left Eye rapping. that girl's flows were SIIIIIIIIIICK!!!!

i'd post it myself but this pc always fucks 'em up.

Here ya go, Willsboy my friend -

Hard to believe that it's been over 15 years since that song hit No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100.

I think the list would look very different if produced by a UK magazine. It would still include a lot of those acts but would include some awesome songs from some of our girl groups e.g All Saints, Eternal, Bananarama, Girls Aloud, Sugababes, Fuzzbox & Strawberry Switchblade.

I didn't see Danity Kane on there, unless I missed it. Those are my girls! lol

i'm sorry man..but FUCK those bitches!!! damn...that was kinda outta line. just pisses me off that Diddy wasted time on these silly girls while Total--the ORIGINAL bad girls got pushed to the side. and yeah i know they weren't the most talented vocally speaking but damn i love those girls.
