As the report says, he's been sent to Ashworth Hospital. That's a high security psychiatric hospital rather than a prison.

did I read correctly that it's a few months there and then years in prison? And i hope the conditions in mental facilities have improved ie no more abuse, torture or experimentation.
My best friend from high school is schizophrenic, inherited from his father who, years ago, had a standoff with police, him yielding a machete. Hes white so naturally he survived the incident. My friend however is mixed, boack mother, and in thebsake circumstances Im terrified what would happen to him. He's had bouts of mild violent unprovoked behavior, last time I spoke to one of his brothers his bro said he'd given up on him.
His mind is... something. He believes he's an arch angel sent from hell to destroy earth, if you'll listen he'll talk about it for hours with the same casual and matter-of-fact demeanornas you and I would discuss the weather.
Hes never presented a threat to public, only when provoked or antagonized, he and the above mentioned brother have had some bad fights. The most concerning part is that he did a stint in the navy. At one point he was stationed on a submarine that presumably had some sort of weaponry. The idea that a man whos convinced satan wants him to kill everyone made it that far into the navy is why i dont support any of our military branches. What other lunatics do we have just a stone's throw away from powerful weapons? Luckily he was discharged after getting into s fight and attacking a superior with some kind of wrench.
Anyway, said all this as a gentle reminder that the mentally ill are human beings. And if we ever want to correct these things the same way we fix broken limbs, we gotta have a more comprehensive plan than A) hope they don't kill anyone and B) lock em in the most secure cage. And maybe don't let them serve in our armed forces. If not for their sake, for our own safety. I never saw any terrible behavior from him, we hung out like normal kids and he was as good a friend to me as any other.
No, you didn't read it correctly. The BBC News report actually quoted the judge who said that McLeod would be detained at Ashworth hospital for "as long as necessary" and then see out the remainder of his term in prison.

I hope security is strict. These forgotten people are prime candidates for sexual abuse, a huge problem in the US. Anyone who is vulnerable is abused, by activists, by medical professionals, no one who is incapacitated in any manner should ever be left alone with just one person in the room. Hell we have so many creepers two might not even be sufficient. Every square inch, every closet, every corner needs to be monitored on camera around the clock.
