Re: Bjork

I love Bjork to death! To me she is one of the greatest musical geniuses in the world. I love just about everything she does. There aren't too many artists that have dozens and dozens of songs that I not just like, but love.

I have a huge playlist in my windows media player with all her songs that I listen to almost daily. Her music is very weird, especially her videos and I love it. A genius can't be like everybody else and be a genius!

I'm glad there are others here on jub that feel just as strongly about Bjork and her music. She is a true original.

I'm looking forward to her forthcoming Biophilia project.

Re: Bjork

Mostly enjoy her older stuff. Her last album was a disappointment. Her much hyped collaboration with Timbaland was superficial at best.

These covers are very interesting by the way. ..|

Bjork 'halfway through' new album and planning tour(!)

Bjork has said that she is halfway through finishing her new album - and hopes to play live before 2011 ends.

Speaking to Icelandic newspaper Fréttablaðið, the singer said work was well underway the follow-up to 2007’s 'Volta' and alluded to a tour plan for later in the year.

"Hopefully I will be able to be on tour in the fall," she said.

She also said she was wary of giving too many details about the album away, adding: "I have had some bad experiences with a number of things before. I'm very superstitious. I go into the studio with a plan to go do what I have in mind, and then the idea is half dead."

The singer revealed one of her new songs is inspired by experiences she'd had after attending a conference organised by National Geographic magazine.

"I saw 100 talks and met eccentric people who had been in Africa for four years with lions and insects," she said. "Then one night after drinking whiskey with them I began to hear stories. This is one of the collaborations I can talk about."

This is my favorite Björk song! The video is extraordinary!

She's so underrated, it's sickening!

Re: Bjork

one of my favorite Bjork songs and videos too.:D

Re: Bjork

One of the most beautiful visions (the song moreso than the video) ever...

"I go through all this before you wake up..." that sentiment pierces me...
the imagery she creates with the song lyrics is stunning...
"We live on a mountain, right at the top..."

Björk’s Karaoke Protest:

Icelandic singer Bjork held a three-day karaoke marathon to help protest a Canadian company’s takeover of a power plant in her country. Reportedly, Vancouver-based Magma Energy Corp. recently boosted its stake in Iceland’s HS Orka power plant. During the karaoke event, Björk and her supporters circulated a petition that calls for the government to consider revoking the takeover. The petition, which reportedly has more than 45,000 signatures, states, “For 100 years, good people protected our natural resources and public interest. [Then] the sale of natural resources and irresponsible access to them began. Now it is time to stop that unfortunate development.” Magma Energy declined a request for comment by The Associated Press but has in the past defend its deal in Iceland.

Re: Bjork

When two completely singular voices link up to record together, it can be a fascinating thing. Omar Souleyman is a Syrian musician whose music draws from a number of traditional Arabic styles but also uses dance beats and synthesizers. The American label Sublime Frequencies has released a few of his records in the West, and his live shows have been drawing rapturous reviews recently. And now we've learned that he's recorded a collaboration with Björk.

Souleyman and Björk's collaborative project will be available on limited 12", CD, and digital download sometime this year. According to a press release, it's "the first-ever major western pop release to feature Syrian dabke and Iraqi choubi music."

Re: Bjork

Thank you for the Björk news I was unaware of all of it! Count me in as a huge fan since The Sugarcubes. "Life's Too Good" was the first CD I ever bought. :) I'm drooling at the thought of a new album!

Re: Bjork

Björk has announced a series of UK shows planned as part of this year's Manchester International Festival, during which she will preview material from her forthcoming album, Biophilia.

A press release describes Biophilia as not only an album but also "A multi-media project encompassing music, apps, internet, installations and live shows". Her six-show, three-week residency at Manchester's Campfield Market Hall will feature her performing with collaborators as well; the festival will also assist Björk in bringing the Biophilia performances to other cities after the Manchester residency. Also, the press release outlines an intriguingly strange assortment of instruments that will be used for the show: "a bespoke digitally-controlled pipe organ; a 30 foot pendulum that harnesses the earth's gravitational pull to create musical patterns-- creating a unique bridge between the ancient and the modern; a bespoke gamelan-celeste hybrid; and a one-off extraordinary pin barrel harp." Cool.

You might remember hearing about Biophilia in the beginning of the year, when a new iPad app titled Solar System, featuring a three-minute instrumental taken from the project, was unveiled. Well, NME reports that Björk has pulled a Gorillaz and partly recorded the new record on an iPad, and plans to release the record as a series of apps for the electronic device. In other words: keep your fingers crossed for a Björk-ified Angry Birds! Check out the dates for the residency below.

Björk Reteams With Michel Gondry for Video Starring Marker, Eraser, and Clapboard

Björk managed to stun her legions of adoring fans today when she posted an image on her official Facebook page (pictured on the right) of a clapper board with the name of her newest single "Crystalline," which will be included on her new full-length album Biophilia, due out later this summer. It also bears director Michel Gondry's name. Next to it lies a red marker with a bundle of tape wrapped around the end and an eraser.

As you may already know, Björk and Gondry have a long history of making music videos together -- having worked on "Bachelorette," "Hyperballad,"and "Declare Independence," to name a few. All of which have gone beyond the norm of what is usually presented as a music video. No two are ever the same and this one proves to be no exception.

Gondry, who is known for his quirky, childlike take on directing, stuns us with what will inevitably be three-and-a-half minutes of this scene with some flashing lights and yarn thrown in for good measure. As shown recently on Hipster Runoff, Björk, like her native homeland, has fallen into something of a budget crisis, which is fine considering the arts-and-crafts approach of Gondry's videos.

The video shown below will help to give some insight into the duo's creative process, which is reminiscent of a first-grade classroom:
