Frankly, I don't believe many of these scene-studios are large enough to offer a WalMart sized selection of genres, so they specialize. (Larger studios do branch out more, but they have the capital to back it up.)

More and more studios are offering scene downloads and streaming video, so people don’t have to sign up for lengthy commitments. This allows more variety for the paying customer, which is good, but it also makes it a buyers market, which is bad for the studios. They want you to buy a membership. That's how they make the most $$$.

So it's a catch 22, of sorts.

But as for the OP: I don't think black men are being ignored. There have been interracial scenes ever since gay porn started. You just have to know the right studio. I'm sure there are many out there.

Sean Cody (to continue my earlier example) has had a few African-American models, but I don’t think many, if any, have been invited back. Does this mean his consumers are racists? Maybe some are, but I’d be more willing to bet that most Sean Cody viewers want to see the ‘type’ of guy he promotes; the waxed, buff Mid-Western college jock. Maybe they are fantasising over the college joke they could never have, or maybe they are lusting after the college boy next door. Either way, that fantasy isn’t a black man. If he were, than clearly Sean Cody is (mostly) the wrong site for them and they’d be elsewhere.

I don’t view this as racism so much as knowing ones customers and providing what they want. (Porn is a flesh market, not a PC parade.) Otherwise, you won’t have customers anymore. Especially in an industry as cut-throat and easily re-marketed as porn. If you find something that works, you work it. At least, so I assume.

I understand it's about the bottom line, but at the end of the day there is some subtle bias at work against non-whites that just sit well with me. It's one of the reasons why I don't purchase porn and also one of the reasons why I'm cautious of the intentions of many white guys in general when it comes to approaching me.

You can’t sell a person something they don’t want, and if a studio specializes in selling mid-western college jocks, than stabling a bunch of black men and Asians probably isn’t going to sell so well to that specific consumer base.

But the reverse is also true. If you go to a site that promotes African-American men, you won’t find many Caucasians, right? Is that racism, or simply meeting supply and demand for that target audience?

Normally I’m sensitive toward racial bias, coming from a racially diverse family myself, but in this case I remind myself that porn is porn is porn.

And for the record, I, a Caucasian, can somewhat sympathise. When I had a profile on a dating site a while back, 99% of my viewers were Asian. I’m like crack to them. But I love my Asians, so its all good.

Only kind of related. I remember when WB and UPN were new networks, and several Blacks went on the record that they should "support" the networks because they were at least attempting to cater to that neglected demographic. I understood the argument, but it sort of fell apart when they were offering such fare as "Brothers From Outer Space"...

But I'm not trying to be difficult, and I do agree with much of what you've said. Though you will have to admit, most African-American youth aren't doing much to help quash the stereotype. My black cousins introduced me to the "top 10" idea and it was shocking, to say the least. Though I don't know how far it carries over to porn.

I'm sorry, are there no young black or asians who live in the midwest and attend college -- or at least are college aged (because I refuse to believe that all, or even half, of the models at SC are students)? I have something against willful ignorance/bias. The bottom line is that a 20 year old gas jockey who lives in a rural area of NJ, and never saw the inside of a college will sooner be scouted for SC than a 20 year old black kid who grew up in the burbs of IL, is actually attending classes and has a good body. So the dismissing the lack of black models at SC being because they go for a "midwestern, college jock" thing is a very scewed explanation. That's not what he aims for, and if it is then he's got a very prejudiced perspective of life.

Meanwhile, like mainstream entertainment outlets like BET, Jet magazine, Vibe, etc., etc., those African-American porn sites like Coco Dorm were largely created NOT for a viewing demographic who ONLY wants to see black models...but rather as a response to sites like SC shunning men of color, and so they give them a chance to work and be featured.

I don't have a "type" either, at least when it comes to porn. To me, attitude probably counts more than anything. I'd rather watch a rather average looking guy (of whatever race) have sex and really get into it than watch a cute, well-hung guy kinda go through the motions in a perfunctory manner. Back in my VHS days, I didn't bother learning any actor's name, but my favorite performer was Hispanic. Not because I've got a thing for Hispanics, but because he always looked utterly immersed in what he was doing. To the original question, it seems race always ends up being some sort of issue, and that's especially so with Blacks. When two white guys are going at it, it's just two white guys going at it. But put in a Black guy, and suddenly there's subtext. Black guy bottoming? It's the Man putting the Black guy in his place. Black guy topping? It's the Black guy getting revenge on the Man. It's like they're not allowed to just, y'know, fuck.

No, that is not the case with me. I was not looking to stir up the pot for enjoyment. As I was looking around at porn sites, I noticed that many do not have black actors. I had heard a rumor that many non-black actors had a policy of not working with black actors and I wanted to find out if there was any truth to that rumor. Do the studios share those feelings? Based on readings from this thread, I need to look around some more. One post reminded me that porn is a business based on supply and demand. The studio have to give their customers what they want or they fail - which obviously makes sense. Unfortunately, there are studios that cater to the "thug" mentality because that is also what their customers want. I just wish there was a larger demand for intelligent acting black guys in scenes with guys from all races and the thug mentality is not present nor is the N-word used.
