Re: Blacks being forced to sit in the back of buse
Cher, the key to understanding why some people take offense at your question might reside in the idea that caucasians rarely ask why all the white people are sitting together. Noticing the self-segregation of one group without realizing that most groups do it reveals a possible bias or ignorance (and that's not calling ignorance as a judgment, but simply as the lack of awareness).
I don't know how many times I've heard someone sitting in a group of only "white" people ask why all the blacks segregate themselves. There's a sad irony there--it's easy to sit in your own group and ask why the other group is so different, when in actuality, they're quite similar in the way they behave.
You're not a bad person for asking the question, but if you can temper your defensiveness in the face of others' irritation and listen to why they are irritated, you might begin to understand far more than just the answer to your question.
