So I was writing my blog as usual today, and an idea came to me. Why don't I 'come out' to the world by writing in my blog?

I'm at the point where I decided I would tell anyone if asked. The problem is, nobody has. This is partly because I'm very straight acting, and also because at some point (when I was still 'confused') I was seeing a girl, and this kinda stuck to people.

The thing is, I'm not very good at conversations in small groups, even among my friends. I tend to feel very awkward whenever we talk about anything that's very personal. Like if my friends joke about jerking off, I'd blush.

I also don't like to make a big scene out of it. So I'm not about to go to a Christmas party and make a big announcement.

So I thought, why don't I write about it in my blog on my personal web site? That's where I post all my photos, so my friends visit it from time to time.

The downside is that I wouldn't know who knows or who doesn't. But maybe after I post it, I'll just assume that everybody knows. And maybe it'll make talking about it easier, since I've already taken a first step.

What do you think? Has anyone tried this? Or is it too much of a lame, easy-way out? If you think this might work, what should I write about? (Like some people who've mentioned this on JUB, I find it difficult to say or write, "I am gay".)

i can't really say if it's a good or bad thing for you, but i would advise that if you decide to come out through your blog that you at least tell your closest friends and family members first.

i would feel kind of bad if someone i considered a close friend came out on their blog and that's how i found out.

Thats a very good point. While it would ease talking about it, it could hurt lots of feelings in the long run. I'd just come to terms with the words "I am gay" in your own mind, before you try to explain that to your friends

I would honestly avoid posting something like that in an open forum. I know we all want to believe that the internet is some safe forum for people to share ideas but it isn't.

If you honestly feel the need to do something like that, do it smart. Post a topic about it in facebook (if you have it). At least there you can limit who can view your notes. Or perhaps even a better approach would just be to say that you are interested in only men. It is a subtle thing that doesn't require much to do and it gets the message accross.

Online messages to the world are fine for people you don't feel that close to. But I'd feel a bit snubbed if a really good friend felt he had to tell me via an impersonal public announcement.

For your closest friends, at the very least, a personal e-mail would probably work best.

I'm going to take a DIFFERENT perspective from the others that have posted...

AND...

I'm NOT saying they're wrong (trust me -- at TIMES -- I'm not sure I should EVER give advice -- LOL)...

BUT...

I think that "coming out" is ALL ABOUT YOU -- AND -- What YOU'RE comfortable with...

IF...

That means that blogging is YOUR most comfortable way of telling people ABOUT yourself -- THEN do it THAT WAY!!!

I REALLY liked in your opening post where you stated that you're at "the point" where if anyone asks -- you'll tell them...

THAT is how I STARTED!!!

It grew from there...

BACK THEN -- I didn't HAVE the internet (as it is today)...

IF -- I had a BLOG -- I VERY LIKELY would have used it!!!

Hope this helps...

And GOOD LUCK!!!

:-):-):-)

Thanks for all the thoughts guys! Yes, perhaps I should at least talk to my closest friends first. It's just that I'm more of a one-on-one person. I've always planned to get each one of my friends out to coffee or drinks, one by one, and tell them. But to do this for all of my friends just seems so intolerable.

But I agree, I'll have to do this for my closest friends...

For the past few months, I've actually been quite open with my blog. I've never made explicit mention of the fact that I'm gay, but I think if you read enough of it, you'd know. I hope this will at least be a hint to anyone who cares to read it.
