When it rains, it pours.

I now have more health problems, and I'm only in my 40s.

I recently woke up to go to the bathroom, and while I was urinating, I felt something strange, so I turned on the light in the bathroom and discovered that bright red blood was coming out of my penis.

This has never happened to me before.

It was too early to call my doctor, so I got online and searched for "blood in urine" and came up with all sorts of horrible possibilities such as bladder cancer, kidney cancer, prostate cancer, etc.

At 9 a.m., I called my doctor's office and told them my symptom and made an appointment to come in the next day.

That first day, I urinated bright red blood three times in a row, followed by pink urine the rest of the day.

Then for the next few days after that, no bright red blood and no pink urine.

But the doctor found microscopic blood in my urine sample, and she sent the sample to the lab. She also took a blood sample, stool sample, and did a prostate exam, and is running a PSA test as well as various other tests, including testing for every possible STD.

She put me on some antibiotics for a week, and this coming Friday, I'm supposed to come back in and give another urine sample to test again for microscopic blood in my urine. If there is any blood in there at that time, she said she would refer me to a urologist for a scope up the urethra and bladder to check for cancers.

I have decided that whether or not there is blood in my urine at that time, I still want to get it scoped to determine whether or not there is any bladder cancer. I don't want to take any chances of it slipping by, and I've heard that sometimes the blood in urine symptoms will come and go for awhile until they cancer gets even bigger.

Has anyone experienced blood in the urine, and then it turned out to NOT be cancer? Please tell about your experiences. I could use a bit of cheering up right now.

Yes, I had a kidney infection several years ago which caused bleeding. Antibiotics cleared it up within a few days and I've been absolutely 100% ever since.

Try to look on the bright side. Cancer is pretty unlikely.

A lot of things can cause this...least of all cancer. My brother had this a few years ago and it was a severe bladdar infection. After two weeks on antibiotics, he was fine and never again had the problem.

I have chronic prostritis(not sure of spelling). It is an infection of the prostate gland. I started in my early twenties and am now in my late fifties. This past year I have had blood in my urine three times. Ran urine tests just to make sure and put on antibiotics each time and it goes away. My doc does a PSA test every year and a prostate exam. I will have flare ups of this and then will go years without any problems. I had the scope done by a urologist and he said that it is not common, but nothing to be concerned about as long as I have the yearly test done and nothing out of whack shows up

By all means have the tests done for your own peace of mind and let us know what happens. Good luck.

It's probably just kidney infection (pyelonephritis) which started out as a UTI (yes, guys can get them too, but it's much more difficult) that travelled up to your kidneys. Did you have some unprotected sex recently and your partner wasn't very 'clean' down there? Have you noted any fever or lower back pain recently before this blood in the urine?

There's a saying that every medical student knows: When you hear hoofbeats, look for horses, not zebras.

Most visible blood in urine (macroscopic hematuria) can be attributed to one of three things: calculi (aka kidney stones), trauma or infection.

Unless you have persistent hematuria or you have other symptoms, a cystoscopy is probably unnecessary. And the chances for bladder cancer for a man in his forties is low.

Thanks a lot guys! Reading this makes me feel a lot better about this problem.

I haven't had any obviously visible blood in my urine since Thursday. And no pain since Thursday.

I hope I really was just freaking out and over-reacting, but I had never seen anything like that before.

I haven't had sex recently, so I doubt that it is an STD, but I am being tested for them anyways.

I haven't had any lower back pain out of the ordinary.

I will let you know what the test results end up being once they come in. Friday is going to be a big one. If there is still microscopic blood in my urine at that time, I will be referred to a urologist for a scope test.

But thanks again everyone for the reassurance. I needed to hear it.
