And what studies or data do you have to back up this claim?

From everything I have ever seen, it could only be transmitted orally if the one doing the sucking had an ulcer, skin tear or open cavity.

OK.. YES, you can catch HIV from oral sex.

TEchnically, you can also get it from kissing and maybe even getting spit on.

it's rare, but so is getting hit by a car when crossing the street.. know your risks and decide which you're willing to take.

I'm gonna jump in and disagree. i had a cut in my mouth and had someone who had it blow in my mouth. he lied about having it and i wouldn't have done it if i had known but i did not come up positive. and it wasn't just a one time thing.and he was by no means the only positive guy i have been with. i had a lot of guys lie about it cause i would not date someone positive or sleep with them if i knew.i have known a lot of whores in my day(including myself) and i don't know one guy that got it from oral. anything is possible but all the guys i know who got it got it from barebacking with them as the bttm. one of my big secrets in life is how many guys i have had oral with. the number is very very high and i am fine(mouths would drop if i spit out the round about number). no i wasn't just lucky cause the odds were way against me. i was crazy horny when i was a little younger before i found love.i am one of the only people i know to not get hiv cause i stuck to oral while they had anal. i went 5 years with no anal untill i found love. i even had a long term bf come up with hep b-we fucked with no condom and i still didn't get hep b. i got the shots soon after i found out he had it. things are not as easy to catch as people would have you think. i have field tested that and am in no way proud of my past.i thank god all the time for seeing me through my slut days and giving me sense to not have anal sex.just so i don't sound to bad i didn't just sleep with anyone who asked. but i did go to some risky sex places with friends. i know people on here will throw some hiv site on here or some study someone did-but i lived it. alot of that stuff out there is out there to scare you.i'm not saying to do what i did or do your own test but so many boys write threads on here about being scared from a 5 sec kiss with no sex! no one should be that scared where it really changes you into a scared freak who can't even kiss someone. just don't let anyone blow cum in your ass! than i would say worry.

Bluedragon... you have to remember that even unprotected anal sex with an infected partner will give you a 2% chance of catching the virus.

Yes, there are some people who are hell bent on scaring everyone into chastity and I think they do more harm than good. Sending people the message that HIV lurks around every corner will lead someone who's made one bad choice to just throw up their arms and say "Well, that's it, I've got it" and give up safer sex altogether.

I too have had a very busy sexual history, and I'm also fine. Lucky? yeah, maybe a little, but I also decided what risks I was willing to take... precum has about the same viral load as saliva. semen, on the other hand, is full of CD4+ cells (macrophages) that are reserviors of infection. Thus, seminal fluid has a higher viral load even then blood in infected individuals.

Saliva is loaded with immunoglobulin A (IgA), an inspecific immunoglobulin which globs on to invading pathogens, inhibiting their ability to infect. This makes sense, as the mouth is one of the body's principle portals. Salivary immunoglobulin is the first step in sanitizing food.

Also, saliva has the enzyme amylase, which is the first step in digesting carbohydrates. As many pathogens, including HIV, are coated with 'glycoproteins' (protiens complexed to sugars/carbohydrate, such as the infamous GP120), digestion of these carbohydrates will also inhibit the pathogen's ability to infect.

Unfortunately, the anus is not, functionally speaking, a portal. It is an exit. Thus, it does not enjoy the salivary immunosurvaillence as the does the mouth.

The mechanism for infection by oral sex that does not culminate in climax is there, just as it is for kissing. So it could happen. While swallowing raises your risk exponentially, it is still nowhere near as high as for unprotected anal sex.

I've seen this number trotted out on various websites that collect information from scientific papers that have studied such things. Of course, the situation is more complicated than just one number. It depends a lot on the sex act and the circumstances surrounding the health of both people. Here's one site with some numbers.

Compared to many other diseases HIV is relatively difficult to catch. The problem is that even with a 2% chance, if you bareback with an HIV+ guy every day for a month you're looking at almost a 50/50 chance of having acquired the disease.
 
NYU is doing as study now and is looking for participants for an HIV vaccine. Some interesting stuff I am thinking about signing up.

DON"T DO IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! they had a study like that at the cleveland clinic when i lived in ohio and everyone came up positive! i had a friend who thought he was doing something ground breaking and it destroyed him! It took me forever to get a hep b vaccine cause vaccines scare the shit out of me. everytime i get the flu vaccine i get the flu. but that's one thing this is hiv! don't let them inject anything into your body. you'll end up sorry.
 
I have some friends participating in an HIV vaccine trial in Seattle. I believe one of them told me that he will no longer be able to get standard HIV tests because they'll always come back positive (even though he's not infected). Basically, the vaccine causes you to produce antibodies against the virus, which is what they test for (not the virus itself) in your standard HIV test. If I remember correctly, there are other (probably more expensive) tests that can detect the actual virus, which is what he'll have to have done in the future instead.
 
Drhlad, no he was quoting figures for unprotected ANAL sex...which would put it lower than some of the percentages cited in your link. WE CANNOT MAKE UNATTRIBUTED CLAIMS ON THIS ISSUE WITHOUT CITATIONS!
