I'm looking for opinions here. My TV went on the fritz last Sunday so I broke down and bought a flat-panel 52-inch LCD HDTV. Love it........... at the same time I also broke down and bought a Sony Blu-Ray DVD Player. I have to say I really love it as well. I got a couple of free blu-ray DVD's, after getting everything connected we watched one........the picture absolutely blew me away. I was honestly stunned.

The reason I got the blu-ray over the HD player was because of the advice of the sales people at Best-Buy. They say that blu-ray is winning out but I hear conflicting opinions about this from many different sources. So now I'm wondering what all you JUBbers think. Do you guys think that Blu-ray or HD will win out and, if so, why?

Right now I'm leaning towards Blu-ray obviously because I bought one, but I have read articles that think that both formats will be around for a long, long time.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say HD will win. Don't always trust salesmen. Many get commissions on what brand they sell. (especially cell phones) There may be more blu ray units out there only due to them being bundled with the sony playstation. Take that fact out of the equation and HD are selling more however consumers are still taking a wait and see approach.

I think blu ray is better, it holds more data per disc. HD is mostly a tweeked up dvd player.

I'm glad you like yours and only time will tell on what system will prevail.

Thanks for the post. Just so you know the sales people at Best-Buy don't earn a commission, so they don't tell you things to try to sell you more or less either way.

Neither will win, there will be two formats until the next generation. It's not much of a war any more, hybrid players that play DVDs, HDDVDs, and Blu-Ray discs are out now, and being snatched up. The format war is all but over, there are 2 superpowers.

Geez, this is a tough one to predict.

Currently the sales of blu-ray discs is outselling HD-DVD disc 2 to 1. This appears to be directly related to Playstation 3 sales since all PS3 can play Blu-ray disc (but not HD-DVD discs).

Based upon this and the fact that many brick and mortar stores (Target, Blockbuster, etc) are starting to exclusively stock blu-ray it appeared that Blu-ray was winning the war.

However this past week two of the media producers (Paramount & Dreamworks) have decided to exclusively produce HD-DVD discs. The reasons stated is superior interactive content capabilities of HD-DVD discs over Blu-ray discs. Seems a tad bogus and there is a rumor that the HD-DVD camp put a $150 million sweetner in the pot to get this exclusivity.

So what seemed like huge momentum swinging in the Blu-ray camp is now thrown into confusion once again. I think this is important since the only reason to buy a HD-DVD/Blu-ray disc is for the content (i.e., movies, etc). Since multiple companies like Universal, Disney, Sony, etc are exclusive to one format or the other you literally have to pick HD-DVD or Blu-ray by which movies you want to watch.

Unfortunately this confusion is likely to hurt the ultimate success of high-def formats (or at least substantially delay the adoption) since the average DVD purchasing end-user is going to delay a purchase to see what happens. Unless good dual format players come on the market (at a reasonable price), you decide to buy a player for both formats or all movies are made available in both formats penetration of these high def formats is going to be very sluggish. At least in my opinion.

This might be true, ultimately. Personally I am only aware of one multi-format player - do you know about others?

The problem with the first batch of the multi-format players is the fact that a number of features don't really work (especially the interactive content, bonus content, etc). Also the prices of these players are higher since they have to pay licensing fees to both camps. I'm not sure if this will be a significant problem - but do remember that one of the reasons the formats are in niche status at the moment is market penetration. I think this is being hampered by the cost of the players ($50 DVD player versus $300-500 high-def player = most end users buy the $50 player). Also don't forget that the movies are generally $5 - $15 more .

In the long run this will work itself out. The real question is - will the return on investment for the media producers be sufficient that they stick with the format(s) until the pentetration spikes? Likely, but it is a risk.

Good point about price ranges. The Blu-Ray player I bought was $489.99 but I got $100.00 off for purchasing it at the same time as the TV. However, they (Best-Buy) did have a dual-format player (both Blu-Ray and HD DVD) but it was $1,000.00!!! A little too much for me.

You can get hybrid players for about $799 now online. They are a bit more expensive because, well they have more hardware and liscensing fees, but totally worth it.

I honestly think it will be both. DVDs are still not obsolete yet (and probably wont be for a while). Hell, less then 20% of the US owns a HD tv anyways. Honestly, whats the point in buying a HD-DVD and/or Bluray player if you don't own an HD tv? Give it about 3 years and then I think we will have a better answer.

I hope they both fail. It pisses me off that they're forcing another format war on us. If one has to win, I guess I'd rather it was HD-DVD, just because it's the slightly less anti-consumer format, even though Blu-ray is technically superior and backed by my favorite fruit-named company, Apple.

I just hope it doesn't end up like the VHS / Betamax war where the best system, Betamax, lost because the major film companies were persuaded to release their films on VHS. While broadcasters continued to use Betamax because of its superior quality. It's not to do with which is best anymore, It's to do with who offers the most enticing inducements to adopt their system.

Yeah, that really sucked. I refuse to buy either of those two formats until one of them "dies." One of the things I absolutely hate is how the various technologies are not standardized. The IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) exists for a reason.

I said it in an older thread - HD DVD will win - mark my words :D

I don't think so... I think it's gonna go back and forth until the 3rd gen is developed, when the war will start all over again. And it's really sad, because Blu-Ray is the better format.

I dont want two formats cuz that means Id have to buy two players. Im not rich.

Then again, I dont have an HD tv yet. So I dont care yet.

You don't have to get two players, just get one hybrid player that will play HD DVDs, Blu-Rays, and DVDs... Done. :)

Yeah but those are even more expensive, arent they? Either that or one of the formats gets limited features or something.
