Bob McDonnell and Wife Indicted On Criminal Corruption Charges

I live in VA; I'm not surprised based on all the stories reported here about this.

Wasn't he on Romney's "short list" of potential VP candidates?

I was wondering what was going on with this. Will he spend any time in prison? Why did they wait for him to be out of office before they did anything?

I live in VA too. About 45 min out of Richmond. Anyway, yes McDonnell was rumored to be on Romney's short list, but I always figured he was a long shot. Tim Cain was rumored to be Obama's VP in 2008 too.

Well, the local news outlet was saying this evening that Virginia Democrats have "forgiven" McDonnell for this, and want to move on with Commonwealth business. I'm guessing no one out of Richmond particularly wants to see McDonnell convicted, regardless of political affiliation. Makes sense really. The Generally Assembly is so divided between Republicans and Democrats we'd be lucky to get Medicaid expansion even with McAuliffe.

My guess is there will either be a plea bargin or minimal jail time if he and his wife are found guilty.

If he's guilty, he should go to prison and join the several democrat governors from Illinois there.

Plea bargain with some sort of minimal $$$ fine at the most. I think new Governor et al want to get busy with minimal distractions as they have a lot they want to accomplish. One 4 year term is very short.

10 o'clock news had a lot more information. It looks like the case hinges on Maureen. The prosecution claims to have evidence that she expelcity told Star Scientific that if they wanted her "help" she needed a $50,000 loan in advance. Hope the decor of a prison wall suits her fancy.

The case against Bob looks a lot merkier. There's a lot of lavish gifts given to him and his family (including $10,000 for catering at his daughter's wedding), but no direct quid pro quo. It does seem that he was the one who paid off the $15,000 loan to SS however, so perhaps this is what the prosecution is going after?

I'm trying to find an article online, but there's nothing yet.

Rachel had a story on him and the Mrs.. Looks like they lived like royalty on someone else's dime those four years.

Corruption at it's worst. But I'll bet you they won't serve a minute in prison.

You forgot to mention that "Barry" is from Chicago. Slipping? #-o

George Ryan has been released from prison. The only remaining ex-governor in the slammer is Rod Blagojevich. The others are dead. You need to pay closer attention. [-X

Remember former Speaker of the House Tom Delay (the exterminator)? He was convicted but didn't serve a minute in prison. "We're all created equal, but some are more equal than others." - George Orwell ](*,)

Here's a slightly different prospective that I found on Maddow Blog:

The scandal that led to the first-ever criminal charges against a governor of Virginia started with a dress.

Soon after Republican Bob McDonnell won his 2009 gubernatorial election, his wife, Maureen, found herself in a tough spot. According to Tuesday's indictment, she needed financial help, and asked Jonnie Williams, the head of a health product company and a campaign supporter, to buy her an Oscar de la Renta dress for her husband's inauguration.

A senior McDonnell staff member shot down the idea, and was met with this in an email from Maureen in late December 2009:

I need to talk to you about Inaugural clothing budget. I need answers and Bob is screaming about the thousands I'm charging up in credit card debt. We are broke, have an unconscionable amount in credit card debt already, and this Inaugural is killing us!! I need answers and I need help, and I need to get this done.

Who paid for Michelle's 50th birthday bash and the family's recent vacation in Hawaii?

Sheesh dude, give it up. You already started a thread on the FLOTUS.

To quote you--PLEASE STAY ON TOPIC. The topic is "Bob McDonnell and Wife Indicted on Criminal Corruption Charges".

The scandal is outrageous.... this guy was supposed to be one of the GOP's shining stars after getting elected to the governor's office, but lol looks like this star burnt out fast and went supernova and now all that's left is the excess gas. Such a venal offense but telling on how corrupt Mc Donnell was. Jack, if you stop making defenses and excuses for the jerks in the GOP your outrage regarding Democratic hypocrisy would resonate a lot more. Oh for some more true independent voices among the rabid partisans here, at least some open mindedness right OR left rather than predictable us vs them.

Guys . . . if you are truly honest there is not much difference in a governor hitting up someone for perks versus a president hitting someone up for perks like birthday parties, vacations, etc.

Can you honestly say that others (including past republican and democrat governors and presidents) didn't get the same 'goods' as Bob McDonnell got and they aren't be prosecuted?

Politicians do things for others -- it's the way politics works -- if you think that congressmen and senators sponsor bills because they feel so strongly for a cause, you are being very naive. It happens on both sides of the aisle.

As an independent Sausy I would think you'd see the hypocrisy.

I'll use Obama's words in describing what's happening ... 'fake scandals'.

If this works for the democrats -- look forward to investigations of Cruz, Paul, Rubio or any other republican running for President.

You've never provided a single shred of evidence that the Obamas are partying on tax dollars or "gifts" from people who sway their policymaking. Ever.

And I know with regard to their trips to Hawaii you're pulling crap out of your ass because my dad friggin knows the guy they rent a house from in Kahala.
