Mayor proclaims 'Bon Iver Day' in Milwaukee

July 22 may be Friday, but it's also "Bon Iver Day" in Milwaukee.

Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett has proclaimed Friday "Bon Iver Day" in recognition of Justin Vernon/Bon Iver's Wisconsin and Milwaukee ties.

Sadly for fans, Bon Iver performances on Friday and Saturday at the Riverside Theater are both sold out.

Since Mayor Tom Barrett proclaimed today Bon Iver Day, why not celebrate it by downloading a free and legal Bon Iver mp3?

Last Wednesday, James Blake posted the following message to his Twitter: "24th August 2011 - James Blake & Bon Iver 'Fall Creek Boys Choir'". It is now August 24, and BBC Radio 1 has premiered the track. Listen to it below:

According to a press release, "Over the past year James has cited Justin as a key influence and it was via a chance meeting at this years SXSW festival in Austin, Texas that the seed was sown for a future collaboration." The track was "formed in the spring over email." It features Justin Vernon on vocals and James Blake on production. It will be available on iTunes on August 29.

At the bottom of the Youtube page for the song, it says, "Enough Thunder - Oct 2011". "Enough Thunder" is the name of a new track Blake has been performing live recently. No other info is available now.

Bon Iver On World Cafe

It's a stretch to call "Beth/Rest" the year's most divisive song, but it's hard to discuss Bon Iver's second album without weighing in on its '80s-style closer. Next to the lush, impeccably crafted grace that precedes it, "Beth/Rest" couldn't be more jarring: With its electric keyboards, saxophones and epic guitar solos, the track could double as the lost love theme to a misbegotten action movie in which Morgan Fairchild seduces a suave diamond thief played by Lou Diamond Phillips.

In circles where such matters are discussed, "Beth/Rest" has become synonymous with "cheesy," defended primarily by contrarians. Which is too bad, because the song is a grower — at worst, there's clearly beauty in there somewhere. Singer Justin Vernon has defended "Beth/Rest" endlessly, and has clearly fallen more deeply in love with the arrangement the more people make fun of it, to the point where he always performs it with its moist embellishments intact.

Until now. As part of a stripped-down set for World Cafe, Vernon threw in a spare solo arrangement of "Beth/Rest" — no saxophones, no solos — on a real, unplugged piano. Vernon still takes his vocal in unexpected places, especially early on, but if you're one of those "Beth/Rest"-haters who wishes the song would get stripped naked and dressed in something more comfortable, you'll want to listen to this. And, as part of a half-hour performance and discussion with host David Dye, Vernon plays two other Bon Iver songs: "Holocene," from the new album, and the lovely but lesser-known "Beach Baby," from 2009's Blood Bank EP.

Bon Iver Release Deluxe Version of LP

On November 29, Jagjaguwar will release a deluxe edition of Bon Iver's self titled second release. The album will come with track-by-track video accompaniments by Bon Iver's Justin Vernon, Isaac Gale, David Jensen, JoLynn Garnes, Ryan Thompson, Andre Durand, and Dan Huiting . A press release notes that the videos are not necessarily "music videos", but rather provide atmospheric visuals.

The release will be available via iTunes, with a limited edition DVD coming in early December, available for free with purchase of the album at select shops and through Jagjaguwar's mailorder.

Details on the Bon Iver Workout DVD

According to MTV Hive, the video posted earlier this week of Bon Iver's Justin Vernon working out with a personal trainer is not only real, but it's part of a forthcoming workout DVD.
Directed by Dan Huiting, who directed Bon Iver's "Calgary" video (and works on the Pitchfork.tv show "City of Music"), the DVD will include workout routines set to music from Bon Iver, Megafaun, and more.

"You can work out to cool music instead of something stupid," Huiting told MTV Hive. "If you're an indie rock kid and you put that music on while you're running on the treadmill, this is an actual circuit... It's in Justin's yard, where he grew up, and it's them doing these three circuit exercises". Because nothing screams FITNESS quite like Bon Iver's music.

Huiting also says he's working on a feature-length documentary about Bon Iver.

4AD and Jagjaguwar have collaborated on a live session that captures a truly unique Bon Iver performance, featuring Justin Vernon and Sean Carey. On recent tours fans will have become accustomed to seeing Vernon flanked by an eleven-piece band, with the swell in numbers lending a grandiose element to even his most delicate songs. Sidestepping expectations, the idea Vernon presented for this session was to provide a wildly different experience.

Recorded in AIR Studio's Lyndurst Hall - a building that was originally a church and missionary school designed in 1880 by the great Victorian architect Alfred Waterhouse (designer of the Natural History Museum) - Vernon was joined only by Carey, with the pair positioning themselves opposite one another at two grand pianos. Although neither Justin nor Sean's first instrument is piano, they were able to remodel the songs in a way that showcases their complimentary vocals and, perhaps more strikingly, a seemingly effortless ability to experiment with form and structure.

As such, fans are treated to jaw-dropping interpretations of several songs from both the new album and the 'Blood Bank' EP, as well as a cover of Bonnie Raitt's "I Can't Make You Love Me". And interpretation is an apt word, as these songs are artfully abstracted from their original incarnations. Rather than layer the sound as on 'Bon Iver, Bon Iver', the focus is on paring back, in part evoking the minimalist approach of contemporary classical music, while remaining true enough to the source material to retain those elements characteristic of Bon Iver.

As on "Babys" and "Hinnom, TX", Vernon's trademark falsetto is positioned centre stage, framed by subtle and unexpected instrumental flourishes that render the performance simultaneously weighty and airless. It's quite an achievement that songs so widely-known and loved in their recorded form are able gain in emotional impact, and stands as testament to Bon Iver's singular talent.
