Two patients have been taken off their HIV drugs after bone-marrow transplants seemed to clear the virus from their bodies, doctors report.

One of the patients has spent nearly four months without taking medication with no sign of the virus returning.

Does this mean we can all go back to barebacking like mad?

Its interesting that the blood marrow transplant went well and produced this great result. They aren't sure if there are hidden wells of the HIV elsewhere in the body, say lurking dormant in the brain. One step at a time ..|

Yeah sorry, the news is great and the joke is uncouth

I thought it was just more of the usual JUB-style vapid goodness that has been concurrent since 2006 and beyond.

But great news if it's true and the patients are HIV negative again.

i bet there's a cure to the virus BUT you know how the government is though.

It's an interesting development, but, as Dejavudoo says, it's far too early to start counting one's chickens. Viruses are funny things.

i bet there's a cure to the virus BUT you know how the [STRIKE]government is[/STRIKE] big greedy multinational corporations are though.

Corrected for added truth. BOTH are accurate. Between the two, do we really stand a chance to see a cure come to full fruition?

Kind of like waiting the the 200 miles-per-gallon carburetor, or the one that runs on water, and the oil companies buy up the patents and destroy them, or the government enacts restrictive tariffs (or something) which protect the current manufacturers in particular.

I seem to remember this type of procedure being tried years ago...and failing to cure the patients. I wonder what, if anything, they did different this time.

I remember watching this documentary on the plague years ago, and there was this gay British guy who was a descendant of one of the survivors of the plague and scientists and did some research with some of his blood samples and apparently they were immune to the AIDS virus.

Hopefully Karabulut will chime in here with more detailed info, however it needs to be pointed out that even if this worked, a bone marrow transplant is an extremely dangerous procedure and one that can have even more negative complications than being on the drugs. It's also extremely expensive. So this isn't going to be an easy cure all.

No, there are heaps of other diseases like warts, hep C , ring worms ... etc

It's a start, however many times the transplant doesn't take. It happened to my cousin. He had leukemia and his brother was a close match. Patrick was given high dose radiation to kill his bone marrow. Unfortunately the donor marrow didn't work and Patrick died because his body wasnt able to produce new blood cells.

It's promising but Def not a foolproof treatment
