BOOKS: What are you reading?

I just finished reading Henry James' The Wings of the Dove for the first time. So happy, because I had tried so many times before, but gave up after only a few pages or chapters.

Now, moving on to another of his late novels, The Ambassadors.

His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman, its called the Golden Compass in the USA. Enjoying it so far!

Yeah that's a great series and I hear its going to be a tv show soon! I enjoyed the movie too but I seem to be in the minority about that lol.

I saw the movie a few years ago and liked the performances from Nicole Kidman, Daniel Craig and Dakota Blue Richards as young Lyra. (In fact, she went on to star in UK drama series Skins season 4.)
Pity they didn't continue the film series. I read they had to tone down a lot of the religious criticism that were in the books as the Bible belt were kicking off in the States saying it was a bad influence on the children!
It would be great if they do a tv show and stick close to the source (dark) material! :)

Still reading The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo but also just finished Becoming Beyonce: The Untold Story By J. Randy Taraborrelli. - Great book! A fascinating look at Beyonce's life.

The political awakening of a black naif. Ralph Ellison's Invisible Man (1952).

Listened to a brilliant performance by Joe Morton.

Currently reading: The Girl Who Played With Fire By Stieg Larsson and The Goldfinch By Donna Tartt.

Confessions of a Sociopath by M.E. Thomas. Heard her in a radio interview awhile back and was surprised to find her likable.

"I never questioned the rightness or wrongness of it, the same way a shark would never question the morality of hunting for its prey. I didn’t create the food-chain power dynamic; God did. And I didn’t ask to be at the top; it was as if I was made that way."

"One could say that by repeatedly manipulating, “ruining,” and crushing people, I’m consistently violating the idea of doing unto others as I would have them do unto me. The thing is that I have no problem with others trying to ruin me back. In my mind, it’s just business, not personal."

"My dad once told me a story about how a church leader advised young men to “stay moral, go oral,” although he now denies he ever said it."

The Magicians. Saw the TV show based on it and thought I'd give the books a shot.

I've read the book, but didn't exactly love it. I can see how it might adapt well to television, though. Do you think the show is worth watching?

The show is worth the watch because it does its own thing but still uses the source well. For example Penny Alice and Q stay together in the same year & they go to Brackbells south earlier minus Janet who is Margot in the show and Elliot. I like that the show is taking its time they are still in their first year in it.
