BOOKS: What are you reading?

Tomorrow, When The War Began By John Marsden
Zodiac Unmasked By Robert Graysmith

I was a bit like him when I was his age and didn't read everything I was told to. But now that I'm older, I figure it's time I make amends to myself.

Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.

The Austere Academy By Lemony Snicket
The Ersatz Elevator By Lemony Snicket

I keep forgetting to drop in here.

This week I've been on a reading spree:

Shifting Reality, by Patty Jansen

Texas and the Mexican-American War, by Fairfax Davis Downey

Time and Again, by Clifford D. Simak

Paul Meets Muhammad, by Michael R. Licona

Shifting Infinity, by Patty Jansen

No God but God, by Reza Aslan

All were pretty darned good, though the one about the Mexican-American War was too brief, and I found myself really disappointed by Reza Aslan's total misunderstanding of Martin Luther and the Reformation. Apart from that glaring failure, No God but God is a superb book for understanding how Islam got hijacked beginning in the generation following Muhammad and more so as time went on, plus the vast changes coming to Islam over the last few decades.

The Vile Village By Lemony Snicket
The Hostile Hospital By Lemony Snicket
The Carnivorous Carnival By Lemony Snicket

Slowly reading through the Discworld books as I get the time. At the moment I'm reading:

Pyramids by Terry Pratchett

I just finished Kierkegaard's Fear and Trembling.

Instead of shying away from the absurd, he finds in the absurd the very basis of his faith.

It's a refreshing take on Christianity than we typically see in these more trivial times.

I've got a line of Jung's stuff lined up for the weekend.

I didn't care for Jhumpa Lahiri's collection of short stories Interpreter of Maladies (1999) at first.

I initially thought the stories were dewy with sentiment. Some are, and some are also remote from the lives of people who aren't wealthy.

But what a keen eye she has, and what devastation she reveals when she casts her eye on the Indian in America, and the American in India. Rarely will you find such depth in so many quotidian details.

Terrific, and worthy of the Pulitzer she earned.
