As much as it can be, though it assumes he actually died at Deptford. It covers what's known of his parents backgrounds and progress over time, the schooling he would have received and the position in put him in society and how it's reflected in his writing.
 
I am re-reading Giovanni's Room. I read it a long time ago and it broke my heart. James Baldwin has always been a favorite author of mine. He, himself, lived a tumultuous life. I also loved Go Tell It On the Mountain and others.
