The Transcontinental Railroad

Definitely worth reading. It shows how the Union Pacific side of the project was treated like a way to siphon money from the government into a few men's pockets, with the building of the actual railroad given only enough attention to keep the company going.

It also starts off every new year/section with a list of things going on around the globe, such as the first Anheuser/Busch beer.
