Boris Johnson Gone.

Boris has resigned as Leader of the Conservative Party, but he has not yet resigned as Prime Minister. He will remain PM until a new party leader is elected at which point he will tender his resignation to the Queen who will then invite the new leader to form a government.

The Queen is head of state and the PM is head of government. In the US, I think both roles are combined in the President.

Oh! Thank you. That makes more sense. The way I'm hearing it on the news here is like he is totally gone and out of government all together.

^ In our parliamentary system, which is much the same as the British system with variations, there are no term limits for the prime minister. As long as the prime minister continues to be elected, they can literal stay in power indefinitely. For instance, Justin Trudeau's father, Pierre Elliott, was prime minister from 1969 to 1979 before he lost an election, but the new prime minister, Joe Clarke, lasted only 1 year and Trudeau was re-elected in 1980 and remained PM until 1984. During that time, he brought Canada its own Constitution and Charter of Rights and Freedoms and paved the way for same-sex marriage in Canada. (Later sealed by former prime minister Jean Chrétien.)

Trudeau was able to come back and be re-elected. Johnson will not. When he finally resigns, it's forever.

In practice, I'm sure you're right. In theory though, there's no constitutional reason why Boris couldn't be re-elected Leader of the Conservative Party at some point in the future if he remains an MP and if the party still commanded a majority of votes in the Commons, he could be PM again. Despite the antics of the parliamentary party this week, it seems that Boris is still popular with many rank and file party members in the country.

The president runs the exec and foreign policy, Congress makes the laws, and controls all the cash.

^ it just shows you how cowardly American Republicans are

We are so polarized and somehow we need to get rid of our two-party system in favor of a parliamentary scheme. In our present situation there is no moderation. For decades we would elect a Republican or Democrat POTUS and pretty much end up with the same middle-of-the-road guy. Now moderate cons or libs or pick-n-choose indy's have to choose basically the lesser of two suboptimal candidates. To be a Republican you end up at a Trump rally and if you're a Democrat you're with the way too nice team that can't bet stuff done. If we had a far-right party and a far-left party and moderates, greens, etc in between the MF's have to work together to form a government and if the PM is a crazy fuck we could lose him in a week or so. Impeachment per the Constitution is a painful, dragged out ordeal and the 25th Amendment to force a resignation could go on for months. One problem with the Constitution is that it assumes moral, ethical people of good will acting for the greatest welfare of the Republic and its People. When you have people who act solely out of self-interest then the system seems to work against itself.

Could do worse, I guess.

At least she is a firm supporter of Ukraine.

Oh C'mon. He was weird as fuck.

Hmm ...

...annnnnnnnnnnnnnd he's back.....

How long til this clusterfuck end with a demand for new elections? Giving the architect to the UK's disastrous predicament his old job back is most surely what NOT is warranted. Hope ole Boris enjoys the few months he will be PM again. That will be it for his political relevance after that.

The opposition parties are already demanding an immediate general election. That's their standard, knee-jerk response. The Conservatives were elected in 2019 for 5 years and have a large majority. They're clearly not going to call an early general election and the opposition parties don't have the votes to do anything about it.
