I know we have many Canadian friends here...
Could you tell me something about Boxing Day in Canada.
Just curious

There are two main theories about the origins of Boxing Day (December 26).

One theory is that servant who were required to work on Christmas Day were given the next day off. Before they left to be with their families, their employers gave them gift boxes.

The more accepted theory is that alms boxes placed in churches were opened and the contents distributed to the poor.

In Canada (and much of the Commonwealth), Boxing Day is a statuatory holiday.

This is what boxing day in Canada is:

The day after Christmas where all the stores have these ridiculous sales, and all the poor saps who work in restaurants and retail have to work long hours all tired because they were forced to work right up to closing on christmas eve, then had one day to do their family stuff then right back to work at 7 am to fend off the hordes of holiday shoppers who have nothing better to do the day after christmas but to hunt for a bargain or two............

Im glad I dont work in the retail/restaurant industry anymore. I feel bad for those who only get one day off around the holidays.

I believe its the latter, a Victorian tradition no less.

^^ That's the one I believe also, but whenever I post it, someone else posts the other one, so I just post both of them. Saves a lot of time.

OK time to laugh @ RicanDAB ...

(1) When I was a kid, I saw Boxing Day (Canada) on the calendar and I thought it was a day that boxing was celebrated in Canada with boxing matches :jab: taking place all over the country.

(2) THEN later, I thought it was the day that everyone fights to go back to the stores to return Christmas presents they do not want **wars** and get deeply discounted Christmas stuff ... in essence the opposite of Black Friday :)

(3) THEN later (and until just now TYVM), I used to think that Boxing Day is the day that everyone "boxes" up their Christmas trees and decorations until next year!

Now I see I have to put a #4 and #5 on my I-Can-Never-Get-The-Boxing-Day-Story-Straight List!

No laughing from me. Boxing Day is as alien to Americans as Thanksgiving in October, which is when we have ours.

Thank you for being interested enough in the topic to have read this thread.

lol I'm Canadian and I thought that when I was a kid.

Boxing Day sales in T.O. used to rock! When the exchange rate was much better than it is now, I was in downtown TO shopping between Eatons (now an upscale Sears Canada store), the Eaton Centre, and The Bay! :D

There's a lot of stores between the Eaton's Centre (thank you for spelling it correctly) and The Bay.

Too bad Eaton's went under. They had a good thing going until that twit screwed it all up.

This is one Canadian who doesn't go near the malls on Boxing Day. I too feel sorry for the retail workers but, sadly, I know too many people who are in line at the stores at 6:00 AM to go after the so called bargains

I prefer to spend the day relaxing with family and friends eating the Christmas leftovers

gsdx refers to it as a statutory holiday. Way back when that used to men virtually everything was closed except essential services. Alas, now, holidays are only for government and government-related (i.e., banks, schools, liquor stores) and the radio personalities on morning shows who keep calling for a stat holiday in February. The only time all stores seem to be closed now is from 6pm Dec. 24 to 6am Dec. 26.

Has our society become so commercial that we need to open on Boxing Day? Can't we give these poor people a break? Soon the stores won't close on Christmas Day at all, especially if those who get offended by Christmas succeed in no longer making it a holiday. But that's another thread....

Basically our Boxing Day is the pretty much the same as your Black Friday down in the states....except the madness begins on Dec 26th and ends on January 01st.

I think it's Neanderthal that we dont' have boxing day off in Canada, and I'll just not show up to work that day.

So there.

And I always heard that it was the first explanation, that masters gave servants boxed gifts and food after Christmas to share with their families.

And having worked retail and restaurants, I know you work like the Dickens all December (making as much money as possible) because you know there won't be anything coming in in January.

In Canada (and much of the Commonwealth), Boxing Day is a statuatory holiday.

December 26 (Boxing Day) is a public holiday in Australia. Some states and territories allow retail stores to open, so the larger stores have Boxing Day sales with sometimes dirt cheap specials on sale. However in Victoria at least, stores with extremely cheap merchandise must have a few items for sale, not just one or none otherwise they will be prosecuted. This was brought about a few years ago when some shoppers were being killed (or at least injured) in the rush to get to merchandise when the stores opened.
However Dec 26 is set aside for major sporting events. It has become tradition now that the Boxing Day (Cricket) Test starts in Melbourne, and the Sydney Hobart Yacht Race starts. This year the Test match is against England (see separate thread on the Ashes). The start of the Sydney Hobart is very spectacular as the large yachts jostle for position on Sydney Harbour then scurry out through the Heads.
