The father of a 9-year-old Cub Scout said Tuesday he has been forced out of a leadership role with the organization and ordered not to wear its uniform because of his sexual orientation.
Jon Langbert of Dallas, Texas, who is openly gay, told HLN's "Prime News" that he had been wearing the shirt the Scouts gave him last year with pride. The shirt identified him as a member of the leadership team that was selling popcorn for a Scout fundraiser.
But that all changed last week. "Everything was running along smoothly until some of the dads complained," he said. When the complaints rose to a higher level of the Scout leadership, he was asked to stop wearing the shirt and give up his leadership role, he said.
"It made me feel terrible to think about the devastating effect it would have on my son, to see his father stripped of his leadership role," Langbert told CNN affiliate WFAA-TV in Dallas-Fort Worth. "It brought tears to my eyes."

wasn't a case like this already settled? maybe one of the lawyers or paralegals here can explain this one to me.

I thought the scouts couldn't do this anymore.

There was a case like this a couple of years ago and then a few years before that. However the outcome was that they were, indeed, allowed to ban anyone or groups of people that they wanted (within the law).

They are a private entity and can make their own rules.

hmm, just to be clear I wasn't stating that I agreed with their policy.

The Boy Scout's win at SCOTUS certainly isn't anything to be proud of. I was a scout and it was a wonderful influence on my life. Now, I wouldn't give them the time of day. Very sad.

can this guy bring it to court again?

he says in the article that his son wants nothing to do with them now, so I guess its moot at this point.

^He could try, but the argument would have to be different than the last time. And he'd have to go all the way up to SCOTUS which is kinda expensive.

Is there anything stopping us from creating a public organization to compete with the boy scouts? Why hasn't anyone done this yet?

I think the main reason it hasn't been done is the image it would create: Gay men taking little boys into the woods..... Not an image anybody wants to be a part of, no matter how incorrect the image (and its beliefs) is to the facts.

But if you feel so inclined, have at it. Just make sure you have enough proof to back your innocence, because once they start getting the boys in with the "psychologists" there will be far too much evidence to prove you a pedophile, AND that you were the one who actually shot Kennedy (and maybe Lincoln, too)

^Intellectually, I agree with you. But as a practical matter it hurts kids in the long run.

I'm afraid I agree that legally they should be allowed to choose who are members. However, if they are a private association they should recieve no money from the government and organizations/businesses that support them should be encouraged not to donate until they change their policy to one of inclusion.

Those organizations/businesses that donate should have to answer for it in the same way they would if the donated to any other hate group.

Because make no mistake the same ammendments they are using to meet and keep out homosexuals are the very same ammendments that allow the KKK and other hate groups the legal right to exist.

It is actually time to make them acknowledge that the policy is flawed and they are perpetuating a culture of fear and hate.

It has been done the organization is called Scouting for All

They're an advocacy group, not a competing organization. As far as I can find, they don't run scout troops or anything like that, just try to get the BSA to grow up.

That's not going to happen, though, for one big reason: the backbone of the BSA is Mormon through and through. They don't even tolerate skinny-dipping any more, let alone gayness.

Reading through their principles and mission statement, it occurs to me that what they need is to somewhere find a religion that celebrates being gay, get kids from it to join a BSA troop... and then if they get kicked out, sue the BSA for violating its own principles.

edit: BTW, they've got quite a gem here -- Facts About Homosexuality and Child Molestation.

I hate to say, but even though I think it is wrong,...they DO have the right to do that. WOMEN have tried to fight to be Boyscout leaders, and they have been turned down, and even lost in court. But....I wonder what will happen if a troop turns away young members because they are Muslim. I have not seen any news stories on that, but I'm sure it could happen in the near future. (p.s.---I feel that that would be wrong too. But which side would win in court....?)

There are Muslim Boy Scouts, and there are troops sponsored by mosques.

Yes....but if a troop in Nebraska said "we don't want no Muslims in our neighborhood Troop", would they be allowed to?

Theoretically, no. But the Mormons have pretty much set a precedent that they can have all-Mormon troops, though that sticks only when there are other troops. In practice, it would depend on the leadership -- troop, local, and Council.
