Boy set on fire by classmates

Also, I'm not blaming the parents, but where is their responsibility? They could at leats release a statement or comment that they are ashamed at the actions of their children.

No, it's Hillary Clinton's fault, as somebody said last month. OR NOT...I'm still waiting for a further explanation on that...

How can this possibly be linked to Hillary Clinton?

FrankFrank:Hell if i could get away with it i'd blame the whole clinton administration on everything that's wrong today! (just a personal rant)

HuntNeo: thanks for update!

She is slowly building an army of violent children and adolescents.

In all seriousness, I can only admire the mother and father for how strong they are being for their kid (having watched both videos). Hope he makes as good a recovery as is possible.

what's really kinda scary, is that while stories like this are just HORRENDOUS--they're really not that surprising to hear. crazy.

Feed that little fucker to the Trunch!!

ROFL! I was not expecting to laugh when I opened this thread.

maybe the American government is to blame for this? how many people in the world have been burnt by the American Military's Actions? how many innocent people?

perhaps they set the example of wiping out people you don't like.

I agree that parenting alone probably couldn't help these boys much now, but it should have been implemented from the get-go as a preventative measure. It's negligent NOT to punish your children, being that they'll be open to punishment by law when they go out into the world.

Parents should be preparing their children for life in society and the core of that is teaching them to respect the value of a human life. Additional courtesies should come naturally as a result.

People are so fixated on the "Don't chew with your mouth open", "Hold the door for someone", etc. that disciplining children has become less related to their moral character and more related to their image at face value. Kinda scary.

Some encouraging news. Going home for the holidays.

Michael Brewer's family members and friends gathered around the television set in their Deerfield Beach home on Tuesday, anxious to see the news they had already heard.

Never mind the toys or glimmering Christmas tree. This was their gift: Michael Brewer was out of the hospital, earlier than expected.

Watch video: Mom of teen burned in attack: He's `in very high spirits'

http://www.miamiherald.com/news/breaking-news/story/1396043.html

His first day out of the hospital, 15-year-old Michael Brewer enjoyed the small things.

He sat on the couch with his family and watched a cartoon movie. He took a shower by himself.

For dinner, he asked for a pizza Lunchable.

It was a good night, except for the pain, his mother, Valerie Brewer, told reporters at a Wednesday news conference.

``He's in very high spirits,'' she said.

But the burn victim's recovery is far from done. He will spend months returning to the University of Miami-Jackson Memorial Burn Center regularly for physical therapy, along with his emotional scars.

``He's going to have to deal with this the rest of his life,'' Valerie Brewer said. ``He wakes up having night terrors every night.''

Michael Brewer garnered nationwide attention after he was attacked by a group of schoolmates in Deerfield Beach. On Oct. 12, the group doused him with rubbing alcohol and set him on fire, investigators say.

He was burned over 65 percent of his body and spent more than two months recovering at Jackson.

Brewer arrived in critical condition. He breathed with the help of a ventilator and was fed through tubes. Four surgeries removed damaged tissue and grafted new skin.

On Tuesday, Michael Brewer was released after more than two months in the hospital, although the family didn't return to their Deerfield Beach home.

Three teenagers are charged as adults with second-degree attempted murder in the case.

stories like these remind me of man's unlimited capacity for cruelty - a capacity that seems pretty consistent through the ages and not just limited to 'kids these days.' the grinding machinery of legal retribution can never really unwind the knot in the stomach a story like this brings. wishing other people's parents were more like mine, doesn't help either. the temptation is to withdraw; call the perpetrators animals; pretend they are the other; plan revenge. how does that help?

- am I mindful of my actions and their consequences?
- do I treat others with respect and consideration?
- do I blind myself to others' suffering?
- am I quick to anger?

If I reflect on these questions with any humility, the answers are not always cause for pride.

"Well, you never set anyone on fire," you might tell me.

Yes and no.
