A dear friend of mine just forwarded this link to me. After reading the blatant discrimination and outright rudeness of American Airline's cabin crew and Pilots I am here by not flying the Un-friendly skies again.

Seems a male couple, upon returning from a vacation in France, were told to stop touching and kissing by the stewardess when the one had simply fallen asleep with his head on his partner's shoulder. The pilot even threatened to divert the flight. Fortunately, the couple seem to have been able to get their story to the press... too bad American Airlines don't seem to understand that all pasengers have a right to dignity.

In the future, I will make a point of kissing my male companion on the next flight I am on, and every future flight after that! And if anyone complains, I'll make sure there's a REASON to divert the flight.

Let's see how long they stay in the air with that kind of customer service!

I have to admit, i flew with American Airlines back in 2003 to California - the air stewards, male and female were the most obnixious and self-centred bastards i'd ever flown with. Everything was a fucking chore to them.

I'd sooner fly with TAROM (Romanian Airlines) at least the rudeness is included with the price.

I read that article yesterday. I couldn't believe what I was reading.

Boycott their asses.

What do they do for members of the Mile High Club? Crash the plane into a mountain or something?

That's outrageous. I just called American Airlines and cancelled my AAdvantage program membership and Citibank to cancel my American Airlines MasterCard! :grrr:

LOL, holy cow! The drama and over-reaction (on here, not on that flight).

None of us were there. Who knows what happened? My partner and I have flown all over the world on American Airlines several times over. Never had a problem. In fact, the worst "to hell with the customer" attitude I encountered was on an Air Canada flight from Toronto to Montreal. Eee gads, that flight sucked.

Hell, most crews are more flaming than we are. Like any airline, though, they're all freaked and stressed and I pay as little attention to them as possible. These passengers were obviously distressed, and they ought to take it up with officials once they're home. But, folks, there are (at least) 2 sides to every story. I certainly wouldn't be boycotting anything, or canceling anything, based on Internet hearsay.

Anything appearing in The New Yorker is going to get tons of publicity, and already all the gay news outlets have picked this story up. The controversy isn't going to go away anytime soon.

As for me, I agree that one incident with a bitchy stewardess isn't necessarily enough to justify a boycott. But let's see what AA's next step is going to be.

If they apologize to the gay couple (which is what they'll do if they have any sense) then I consider the incident closed.

If they even say "Flight crew is not allowed to consider the sexual orientation of passengers when deciding what is and isn't acceptable behavior," that would probably be OK, even if I don't really believe they have any such policy.

If they do nothing, or continue to back up their crew without a LOT more explanation, then yes, I'm in favor of a boycott. "Other passengers were offended" isn't good enough -- tell the "other passengers" to grow up.

But it's hard to believe American Airlines would be so stupid as to alienate a segment of the population that spends so much on travel every year. Not to mention that they have tons of gay -- and unionized -- employees.

This why I'm more inclined to believe that a little more was happening between the guys. I don't like to see anyone - gay or straight - devouring each other in public like they hadn't eaten for days, and if that's what they were doing, along with some heavy fondling, then in close proximity, i'd have probably complained. It's not like you can walk away from it on a plane is it! LOL

It is also down to the stewards to watch out for any potential issues and prevent them from escalating. It may well have been she thought that had their behaviour continued then it WOULD lead to complaints.

However there is still a whiff of discrimination about the whole thing!

Boycotting American Airlines would be a grave error for the gay community.

#1) They were one of the more progressive companies during the 1990s by being gay friendly.

#2) They were put in a tight position by other complaining passengers who wished to remain annonymous. What reason would cowardly bigots have to expose themselves anyway?

The service industry walks a thin line between pleasing many at the expense of the few. Airlines like American serve a broad demographic and sometimes there is conflict because of this. I think that ire should be directed not at the flight crew but whoever among the passengers that had a problem with gays on board.

Why should I boycott the entire airline, simply because of this one incident?

I got semi strip-searched by airport security in AA's terminal at LAX. The plane was 2 hours late - it was already a red-eye overnighting to New York - so we left at 1:30am instead of the advertised 11:30pm and the plane was very old and filthy.

Give me United over AA any day - had 4 good flights with them.

Lets all just step back, take a deep breath, and relaaaaax.

Unless you were sitting in 20C or maybe 19AB, then I don't think we need to over react. AA have a pretty good name around the world for fairness and I really doubt that all the Queens at Qantas would have allowed a partnership with AA if they're that homophobic!

I'm thinking there is a lot more to this story than is written here and am happy to reserve judgement on AA until both sides of the story emerge.;)
