my bf is Irish and Scottish. He doesn't know what the Irish flag looks like so I had to show him. Similar to both of mine actually, (Mexican and Italian.) But the Scottish thing I'm stumpted. Technically Scotland has its own mini-government and culture, but it IS somewhat a province and a part of the United Kingdom. The globe we have shows the United kingdom as one nation next to Ireland. So Would his other flag be The British flag of red white and blue?

this is the flag of Illinois

It has his own mini-government and probably also something that the inhabitants call culture. But it somehwat IS a part of the United States.

Those guys also have a flag:

Now I wonder - if you happen to come from Illinois - what would be your flag?

Ok the American Flag. I get it. Thanks Corny you answered my question! *hugs and kisses on cheek* You made a great point!

Depends on how proud of your heritage you are. Scottish history is a bit different, and the scotts are very proud people

Or playing Europa Universalis?

Anyway, Scotland's flag is a bit similar to the one you're setting on fire in your profile. Both have St Andrew's cross or something.

Um The confederate flag/White Supremacist flag isn't the same as the Scottish flag.

He didn't say that. He said the Confederate and Scottish flags are similar in that they both have the cross of St. Andrew on them:

The Scottish flag is the cross of St. Andrew, also known as the Saltire. It is said to be one of the oldest national flags of any country, dating back at least to the 12th century.

The Confederate battle flag, called the "Southern Cross" or the cross of St. Andrew

I'm not sure about other European sports but I know in F1 drivers from the U.K. are still represented by their individual flags, Scottish with the Scottish flag and English with the English flag.

I've been a "teacher" for a brief period of time and I must say that reading with comprehension is one of the most important things people are being taught in school.
Or should have been taught.

Oh, and thank You, gsdx

Its like old saying: Would you rather be pissed off or pissed on. Believe it or not, MOST of the people I have brought this question up to honestly can't understand the difference between one and the other.

Sorry to veer from the topic a bit, but this is related. Why are so many people of caucasian/European heritage so fixiated on a specific "nation" to identify with on or near the continent?

None of those countries emerged from a vacum. They have shared histories and demographics. "Scotland" and "Ireland," both culturally distinctive and interesting to study from historic and anthropological perspectives. But why someone would be interested in flagging themselves as belonging to one or the other, particulary when they don't live in either place and have ancestral connections to both?

Madonna, I would just describe your boyfriend as an american interested in his heritage.

And thank you for burning that flag sweetie!

Flags represent your nationality, not your ethnicity.

If he wants to represent his ethnicity, I suggest a thistle and a claddagh.

Because we're a nation of immigrants, and the only people who are ethnically American are the ones who came over the Bering Land Bridge thousands of years ago.

Well I'm aware of that. No interest in arguing semantics about who's a real american. But I'm referring to the fluidity of cultural and demographic patterns in the "old country." I'm inquiring why a can of mixed vegetables is so intent on tying its historic identity to a specific bin in the produce department, where vegetables frequently share or trade spaces. Just how "Irish" or "Scottish" is an american of mixed heritage to want to wear the identity of one versus the other.
