Not to mention Ranter has a HUGE rep supposedly for being really ignorant, especially towards women. Total misogynist.


I'd prefer him getting fired than resigning (of course, who knows what it was behind closed doors, perhaps it was a firing and this allows him to save face a bit by 'resigning').

We've got to send the message that ignorant and homophobic comments will no longer be tolerated at any cost...and that there will be real consequences. If not, nobody will ever really learn, and they'll just continue to think they can get away with it by saying "oh, I'm sorry. I hope no one was offended".
Something has got to change.
 
This next Oscars is shaping up to be a cataclysmic disaster. I can't wait!

....Or because about 90% of all the people who will be working on getting the Oscars together are homos, were they afraid of sabotage?????
 
Eddie Murphy just quit as well. Man, I think the people at the Oscars are making to big adeal over this. He used the word "fag" okay so what. Are we becoming to sensative of a people that we have to watch every word that comes out our mouths. Give me a break. I agree with rareboy, and shout. WTF!!!!!

Not quite what I was getting at. Like I said, I don't really care because I think the guy's movies are shit anyway....I'm just surprised at the magnitude of the reaction.

And I don't really care whether Murphy is or isn't hosting. As long as it isn't that loser James Franco putting nothing into it this year, it has to be 100% better than that fiasco.

Was there something more to this than I've been able to gather?
 
Look, I'm not exactly losing sleep because this douchebag used a gay slur. But it clearly shows what he really thinks about gay people -- that we're not real men, we're inferior to straight men.

Fine, it's a free country, he can believe whatever he wants. And I'm sure it's not going to hurt his career as a movie producer (see Gibson, Mel). But producing the Oscars? I don't think so...

So are we saying it's ok to use "fag"? That it's not as serious as other derogatory terms towards African-Americans, Jews, etc...? Hell, even Christians. What if he had casually used a hate term referring to any one of them... where do you think he would be?

Why do we have this attitude where we call out folks when they say things about those groups, but we allow people to get away with derogatory terms referencing LGBTQ individuals? When it's about them, it's hate. When it's about us, all of sudden we are "too sensitive" or "a nation of cry babies"?

Why don't they just eliminate the job of host completely? All it really amounts to is a standup routine at the beginning, then announcing some of the presenters. Just a time-waster. And whoever they choose, it always makes someone mad. So just drop it totally. And get rid of the awful production numbers as well. That would improve the show a lot.
 
Basically, all this bitching and moaning about it gives power to the word. It is a word, does it describe who you are no. But are there guys out there that act like "fags" yes, just like there are blacks who fit the word "nigg*r" and whites who fit the word "cracker", or "white trash". It is words, and by responding to them you give that word power. Someone said "that is isn't what people call me that matters, it is what I respond too."
 
I'm almost as offended by the "Rehersal is for fags," comment from a theatrical perspective as I am a social justice perspective.

Who is this no-talent explosionmonger who cannot direct his way out of a wet paper sack? No wonder his movies, even when they have excellent actors, suck out loud.
 
I'm laughing because he voluntarily quit - as in, he was lambasted, but at the end of the day would probably still have the position, and yet, people are defending him. Defending him for the same thing that people decried Quinton "Rampage" Jackson for saying(that being in movies, in makeup was gay - and i'm paraphrasing).

Gee, he saw what he said - not just about gay people, but of past love "conquests" - as wrong and as a distraction; unwanted attention to the academy. So what are people defending here? HE saw the error of his ways - does that make him a crybaby, or a person that, in this day and age and in this country, actually owns up to what he does, wrong or right?

GLAAD can't - and better not - take (full) credit for this. The man was wrong, he was called on it, and HE took the appropriate action himself. IMHO, losing Murphy is a bonus.
