Bristol Palin Gets Dumped by Washington University

... for all any of us knows, she's a perfectly likable person who made some bad, but common, life decisions (and whose mother is exceptionally annoying).

Agreed.

But people who make bad, but common life decisions are not paid $20,000 to preach hypocrisy to people who have had more education and life experience than they have had.

It is unbelievable anyone would pay Bristol Palin that much money to speak about abstinence. Even the way she dressed on Dancing on the Stars presented the image of a promiscuous young woman. She is no role model for any girl to make decisions on their sexuality.

It's called common courtesy not to call people names like this.

It takes away from the discussion.

All you are doing is trolling.

no, you and loki81 are distracting from the convo. You have changed this thread completely in a different direction. But then, that's what you do.

Maybe they could get Bill Clinton or John Edwards to give a talk and discussion about abstinence.

Would that be OK?

ALSO: If people would use real news sites instead of agenda blogs for stories people wouldn't get so confused.

There is more to the story than what the alternet.org blog reports.

I thought you've been told in the past that Alternet is a legitimate source.

If there is more to the story than Alternet, post a cite. That would add to the discussion.

That would be equally hypocritical with regard to abstinence, although they are at least men with a list of qualifications and achievements, so they would have things of interest to say.

As the unwed mother of a young child, and the daughter of a politician who has yet to serve a full term in any position, Ms Palin's claim to fame is no different to that of any other reality star. Washington University might as well ask an ex-Big Brother star to speak.

I'm torn over this issue. You never really understand a problem until you fail at solving it, then try again to succeed. Perhaps Bristol's viewpoint is an important one: she has the ability to speak from one of experience, of failure, and of understanding the consequences of NON-abstinence.

But, on the other hand, there are many, many young unmarried mothers with similar stories, who probably speak much better, and who won't cloud the issues with cheap celebrity status. And who won't charge $20K for the privelege.

I have no respect for Bristol whatsoever. She's a celebrity solely because of her mother.
She has no talent of her own to speak of and is a hyprocrite trying to lecture others about something she failed to do herself.

^ I'd take issue, too, if I thought that her speech would include some recognition that she had messed up herself, and that there are consequences for it.

But considering what I've learned about that whole family, I wouldn't expect her to "call herself out" in any way, but lecture that nobody else should have sex before marriage, because it's in the Bible and you all should lead holy lives, doncha know.

I'll bet she would bring gay sex into it as well - that gay people can NEVER have sex, because it can never be for procreation. (Of course, if that is true, heterosexual marriages should be forced into annulment or divorce after the woman goes through menopause, shouldn't they?)

There's something seriously wrong with any organization who offers thousands of dollars to a member of the Palin family to speak on any subject. They don't really care what they have to say, they just want the controversial celebrity in their presence. It's a good thing someone wised up and dumped her.

I like the drug addiction / teenage pregnancy analogy . Brilliant. Would work well with Cheney speaking on gun safety.

that's the one point I've heard mentioned a ton that I take issue with.

you want to talk to kids about the dark side of drugs? you bring it an ex-junkie with hardcore meth face.

the fact that Bristol Palin has no clue how much it really sucks to be a single, teenage mom because her family (and she herself now) are rich is a whole other issue.

The comparison is not fair.

It is reasonably possible to go through live avoiding illegal drugs, and thereby avoid them becoming a problem for you.

It is nearly impossible for most of us to go through life avoiding close relationships, including sex.

Appreciating the experience of a drug addict might help some of us to avoid drug use. Appreciating the experience of Bristol Palin will not help some of us avoid sex.

And yet, avoidance of sex is what she now advocates as the way to avoid what happened to her. It is an argument as weak as it is dangerous.

Not to worry. I heard Ms. Bristol Palin was on Maury Povich's show today. I would not want to refer to her as a "bitch" or a "cunt" Let's just call her "Mediawhore Jr." The apple doesn't rot far from the tree. What's next? Jerry Springer? :gogirl:

Actually the furor was more over the high cost to be paid to someone who is a dubious expert, especially when student activities have been canceled for lack of funds

Definitely. I was in on getting a couple of guest speakers for events at OSU, and even for people with doctorates and published works to their name we never paid that much!

Washington University has redeemed itself. The new campus speaker is going to be Michael Vick who will present a speech on the importance of being kind to animals. (!)

If you will read the thread title carefully, I specified Bristol Palin's mother. I think they are two separate people although sometimes it's hard to tell. You should reevaluate just exactly who is obsessed by what.

Sorry, you are just attacking Bristol because she is Sarah Palin's daughter.

If she was not Sarah Palin's daughter, you would not have commented here. Nor would you have cared.

Your obsession continues.

If she were not Sarah Palin's daughter, she wouldn't have received the invitation from Wash. U. I'm more concerned at how fucked up Wash. U. has become. I am concerned, not obsessed.

obsession:
1. Compulsive preoccupation with a fixed idea or an unwanted feeling or emotion, often accompanied by symptoms of anxiety.
2. A compulsive, often unreasonable idea or emotion.

You must be confusing me with someone else.

No, it wouldn't. Thanks to our illustrious GOP-led legislature in Florida the public university system is in for massive funding cuts which will be passed onto the students in higher tuition, fees, and any other method they have to rape us out of every dollar we have. 20 grand for anybody to speak on any issue is a gross mismanagement of University funds in today's economic situation.

There would be a riot at my school if they paid anybody 20 grand for a speech, yet don't have the funds to hire a part-time security guard to direct traffic on our university's most fucked up walk-way intersection.
