Re: The Official BRITNEY SPEARS Discussion Thread!
Ok. I'm done trying. Seriously. You're not going to see my point and I'm definitely not going to see yours so we'll just agree to disagree.
BTW Nocturnal...good mature response. Can't wait to see your traveling comedic road show.
Teehee...sorry, that was a little bitchy of me. I sincerely apologize. You'll get your free front row tickets in 3 weeks.
Now, like chastising an unruly child, this has to be done...for their own good. At times you must be firm (or bitchy), and the child will initially hate you for it, but you're doing it because you love them and they need to learn the laws of the land.
Now Stephen, please forgive me for what I'm about to do, but it must be done. I can't have someone call me out, and not respond. I'm not doing this to offend you, I'm doing this for the children....OHHH won't *somebody* think of the CHILREN!!!!!
Remember, my point was that Gaga is
more critically acclaimed and talented vocally/musically than Britney. I never said Britney wasn't talented or critically acclaimed.
I think it's safe to say Britney is a legend. She's broken so many records by now and has made her place in the business and clearly isn't going anywhere anytime soon.
I never said Britney wasn't a legend. I'm sure it seemed like I was insinuating that, and I was to certain degree (as I will elaborate on in closing...i sound like a fucking lawyer...). I personally don't put her up there with Cher, Madonna etc. Not quite yet. AFA breaking records, the same could be said about Taylor Swift, Rihanna, Ke$ha...it seems every week someone's breaking some kinda record. Doesn't make them a Legend. Least not in my book.
A 12 year STRONG career in the music business is what she has.
Can't really argue with that. Though...there was that whole Blackout era...u'know, the lame VMA performance, and the fact that 'Black Out' debuted #2 with 290,000 copies and hasn't crossed the one million copies sold mark in the US yet since dropping in 2007...but I digress. Other than that, yes, it has been really strong.
(And all the talk that will come about "lack of promotion" for Black Out? K, that may explain why the general public didn't respond to it, but where were her fans? *They* sure as hell knew about it.)
Gaga is great and has a great career right now but she's still 2 or whatever years in she's got a long ways to go to catch up.
That's thoughtful and true. And thank you, we appreciate the compliment.
PS Brit fans can equally back it up
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iwJgrng2DNk - with raw and unedited vocals
Equally? K, Ladies and Gentleman of the jury, let the record show, once again, it is obvious by the reverb effect throughout, the performance above is *not* unedited and raw. And certainly nowhere *near* equal this Gaga performance of 'Paparazzi' which *is* raw and unedited, and Live.
Watch it all the way through. Highlight @3:55. I'd like to see and hear the vid of Britney doing that! After 12 years in the game, it must be out there somewhere. C'mon, show me the receipts!

performances CEMENTED in pop culture history...no one talks about performances these days like they did with hers. No one could even come close to causing the stir Brit does.
2000 VMA-

2001 VMA-

2004 VMA-

No doubt. The 'Oops...I did it again' remix' performance was epic AFAIWC! I remember watching it on repeat forever back then. Now when I watch it, all I see is a lot of shaking, and hair tossin' and fuck, that 'ol raggedy ass cat next door does that on most of her good days!
Britney caused a stir, because her image was pretty much sugar sweet and innocent, and then all of a sudden there she was on stage stripping down to a cleavage-revealing flesh-colored jumpsuit...dancing with a python, and kissin' Madonna. Of course it caused a stir.
The choreography in the 2001 VMA performance was Amazing though! I want to see her like that again! No way any of the females in the business could pull off that choreography at the moment!
K, here's Gaga playing piano and singing Live, a little shouty at times, but shit, at this point she's barely a songbird hatchling.....hey, don't let me get the 'Paparazzi' video posted above again cuz...okay...just sayin'...
@2:05 I want hear Britney do that Live. (Let me take this opportunity to remind everyone, I simply said Gaga was
"more" talented vocally than Britney, and that the no smoking sign is still illuminated. Thank you.)

Thank you. First of all, as you have said already, Britney's been around for 12 years. Gaga's approaching 3 years. Needless to say over 12 years you're going to accumulate more awards and noms than someone whose career is only 3 years old. And so many of those awards are now defunct anyway.
Now, let us stroll merrily down the list of Top music awards...but no SKIPPING!.....thaaaat's it....just a nice, easy, leisurely stroll...... ok, now, I think it's safe to say those Top music awards are the: Grammys, The Brit Awards, Billboard Awards, Mtv Video Music Awards and we could (or not) throw in the World Music Awards.
I shouldn't count the "People's Choice" type of award shows because they're (arguably fixed) voted by the general public/tweens with a shit load of free time and not by critics, members of the business/her peers. And of course the core of my post was about Gaga being more "critically acclaimed" than Britney. I shouldn't count the Billboard awards either since it's basically defunct now (or TRL definitely).
Britney's 12 year old career vs. Gaga's 3 year old career:
World Music Awards: Britney has 3 nominations, 3 Wins (in 2000/2001). Gaga has 5 nominations, 5 wins (all in 2010)
More
American Music Awards: Britney has 5 nominations, 1 win. Gaga has 6 nominations, 1 win.
More (Nominations at least....nitpicking, I know

)
The Brit Awards: Britney has 4 nominations, 0 wins. Gaga has 3 nominations, 3 wins (2010)
More
Billboard Awards: Britney has 16 nominations, 10 wins (spanning 12 years). Gaga has 13 nominations, 13 wins (spanning 2, 3 years).
More
Mtv Video Music Awards: Winning this award isn't really all that relevant here since last year's awards were voted on by the general public, but comparatively Gaga's been a bit more impressive here in her first 3 years, than Britney has in her 12 years afa nominations/wins of the major awards like VOTY are concerned.
Britney has 27 nominations, 4 wins (spanning 12 years). Gaga has 27 nominations, 11 wins (spanning 3 years). Though again yes, in 2010 they were voted on by the general public, but still.
More Britney's been nominated for 'Video of the year' 3 times, 1 win. (spanning 12 years), Gaga's been nominated for 'Video of the year' 2 times, 1 win. (spanning 3 years).
In any case, viewer voted or not, we'll see at this years VMA's won't we? There's no avoiding it. Should be amazing!
People's Choice Awards: Britney has 6 nominations, 1 win (huh?) (spanning 12 years), Gaga has 6 nominations, 2 wins (spanning 3 years).
More
Grammy Awards: Ahhh The TOP prize in music: Britney has 8 nominations, 1 win (spanning 12 years). Gaga has 12 nominations, 2 wins (spanning 3 years). Britney's 6 studio albums' AOTY nominations: 0 (spanning 12 years). Gaga's 1 studio album and 1 EP AOTY nominations: 2 (spanning 3 years).

Rolling Stone said her album Blackout was the most influential pop album of the decade. Her version of "Telephone" that was not even released officially made the top 25 singles of the year. So there's your critical acclaim. PS. I'm pretty certain Gaga's album was released in that same decade
http://www.theprophetblog.net/rolli...-influential-pop-album-of-the-past-five-years
Sorry, no. Rolling Stone said it was "possibly the most influential pop album of the last five years." I'm not sayin it wasn't, I think it was her BEST album to date (completely underrated!). However in any case, that article was written by ONE individual, who could possibly be a HUGE Britney stan (they do have jobs). Possibly. 1 person's opinion. 1 person.

And as if you didn't think she still had it, Here is everything "Hold It Against Me" has done so far:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hold_it_against_me
Breaking many many records and has critical acclaim.
Here is the HIAM Critical reception Wikipedia entry you suggested I look at.
Wikipedia said:
Rick Florino of Artistdirect gave the song four and half stars, calling it "one of Britney's catchiest club bangers yet" and saying "[it] proudly stands alongside Britney classics like 'Womanizer,' 'Gimme More,' and 'Toxic,' but there's a refined ethereal elegance to it that sees Britney stepping into new territory and pushing the boundaries of dance pop once more."
Rob Sheffield of Rolling Stone compared the song's riff to AC/DC's "Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap" (1976), and referred to the song as "prime Britney."
Jim Farber of the Daily News said that the song is reminiscent of Spears's previous hits, noting the double entendre lyrics and arrangement, and added, "With all that behind her, the 'Oops' girl may yet do it again."
Bill Lamb of About.com called it one of the most mature dance pop songs of Spears's career, praising the chorus structure and the electropop bridge. Lamb stated, "The pop music of 2011 has an early shot in the arm here. ['Hold It Against Me'] will quickly take its place among Britney Spears' best singles."
Popjustice positively compared the song to the leaked demo, saying that while the lyrics and melody were not different, Spears's finished version "is approximately 1000 times better than the demo. It's a harder, more urgent, extremely epic statement track that sounds like the work of a superstar."
"...With "Hold It Against Me" already under her belt and making a lot of noise, expect Spears to have one of the biggest years of any artist out there — and perhaps of all time." ~MTV.COM
Brad Wete of Entertainment Weekly said "'Against Me' [sic] is classic Britney —
that is to say the vocal performance is far from stellar, but it serves as a nice accessory to [Luke and Martin]'s thumping Euro techno groove." He also added that
Spears did not enter any new territory lyrically, and that
there was not much growth when compared to singles such as "...Baby One More Time" [1998] or "I'm a Slave 4 U" (2001).
Greg Kot of the Chicago Tribune commented, "It’s one of the tougher-sounding Spears singles yet and
should do the job as a dancefloor-filler for listeners who are starting to wear out on the latest singles from Katy Perry and Black Eyed Peas". However,
he also dismissed the lyrical content and said that Spears sounds "bored [...] as is the case with most of her recent work."
Nick Levine of Digital Spy said that although "Hold It Against Me" was produced by Luke and Martin, the finished product was not similar to songs by regular collaborators Kesha and Katy Perry. He also deemed it as "clubby and au courant",
while comparing it to Rihanna's "Only Girl (In the World)" (2010).
Jim Cantiello of MTV commented that "Hold It Against Me" combines the electronic sound of contemporary radio with a "sing-songy" chorus that references Spears's bubblegum pop past.
Edna Gundersen of USA Today criticized the use of pick-up lines, but said the single "delivers enough dizzying dance-pop ecstasy to ensure another chart-topping ride."
Glenn Gamboa of Newsday stated that "Hold It Against Me" was "a bit safer [...] like her current low-key, non-tabloid persona."
Michael Cragg of The Guardian called it "decent enough."
The Globe and Mail's J.D. Considine called the reworking of The Bellamy Brothers' song "lame", but concluded that the track was "perfect ear candy", calling it "lust made audible".
Spears's vocals has been described as
"a bit treated - it's a Britney single" but not heavily
Autotuned.
The hook was noted by Ann Powers of Los Angeles Times to be reminiscent of "(I Just) Died in Your Arms" (1986) by Cutting Crew.
So what I'm hearing here is that it's, "decent enough", some of *her* best work, not much growth when compared to singles such as 98's "...Baby One More Time", a bit safe, weak lyrically, her vocals have been a bit (but not surprisingly) treated, "the vocal performance is far from stellar", comparing it to other artist's songs (Rihanna's OGITW from just last year? Ouch!) and as pretty much nothing new, reminiscent of her own previous hits. So pretty much most of those^ critics are saying it's "ok." Also, these^ are reviews of one song. One.
And I won't mention Taylor or Rihanna or Ke$ha etc again afa breaking records.
So I think I covered everything....... She has talent. She has charisma.
^This part makes me feel kinda sad, Stephen.
I never said she wasn't talented or that she has no charisma. I'm a fan of Britney, and like you, want all the best for her too. She's been through allot: Kevin Federline, the shaving her head/paparazzi umbrella attack breakdown, being admitted to a psychiatric ward for holding her boys hostage and then having them taking away from her? No one deserves that, especially Britney. She's never said a bad thing about anyone that I can recall, and I can't say that about many other females in the business.
She doesn't need to remind everyone numerous times why she is in the business and lets her work speak for itself.
So I take it what you're saying here is these days Britney doesn't flaunt her sexuality or make music that appeals to tweens and teens and clubhoppin' pop music fans like she did when she first entered the business? I mean it *is* her tween/teen appeal and sexuality that got her (and yes, Christina, Gaga etc) into the business. (But unlike Christina and Gaga) it certainly isn't her vocal skills, musical talent and suburb songwriting skills that have and will keep her in the business. It *is* her sexuality (in song lyrics, videos etc) and a loyal (most of them tweenage when they started listening to her, then and now) pop music fanbase that's keeping her in the business. And good for her, she's one of the lucky ones.
However, large sales numbers do not equal high quality music (where would I begin? 'NSync anyone?): Britney *is* undoubtedly the Queen of the Tween/Teen Pop Princesses being the 1st out the gate in the late 90's, and with that comes a multitude of fans, and they are very loyal, so her sales reflect that.
(Yes, I'm aware of Tiffany, Debbie Gibson etc in the late 80's, but I think that was a different time in teenpop music. I think back then the focus of the str8 teen gurl was on NKOTB, and less on the female singers.)
She never starts shit with anyone even though she do with her all the time.
Who, Gaga? If it's Gaga you're referring to, I don't remember Gaga starting any shit with Britney. I've never heard Britney start any shit with anyone, that's true.
Her career has outlived many many artists when she was said her career couldn't.
That's true and her loyal fanbase takes all the credit for that. I think Gaga will do the same.
And she is a legend whether people like to admit it or not.
I think she's a Legend in her own right....yes. However, until she's in the 'Rock N Roll' Hall of Fame or when top artists start covering her songs on their albums or they have an Mtv: Icon-esque Britney Spears concert or tribute, I can't put her up there with Cher, Madonna, Elvis, Aretha, Michael etc etc. She's not there yet IMO. She will be one day, no doubt. As will Lady Gaga.
That was fun! I learned allot too!
