This album is amazing. It is my favorite piece of work she has ever done. Every song is so different but it all works together.

Criminal and I Wanna Go are instant hits and my favorites!

Ignore all the references to other pop stars. That is not what I am focusing on. I whited out all the seemingly "negative" references to other pop stars because I know how psycho some people can get. If you want to read them then highlight it.

Obviously, much of her appeal depends upon the legacy she built during her first five years, which, in case you were in a coma for, were some of the most explosive that pop culture ever had the pleasure of experiencing. She was as ubiquitous and bombastic as Lady Gaga is today — without all of the haughty pretension that the latter is currently infecting the pop scene with. From the Catholic schoolgirl outfit (Britney's idea) to the iconic VMA performances from '00 (the glittery faux-nude outfit), '01 (the snake) and '03 (the Madonna kiss), to her world-class dancing, Britney always delivered a hypnotic, intoxicating set of imagery to go along with her world-class pop. But quite frankly, much of her musical appeal is her distinct, unique voice. People confuse having a powerhouse voice with the ability to sing well. Britney Spears' voice is, quite honestly, fantastic. It's wonderful for pop. It's got a thin, sexy, girlish quality that is also found in the likes of Kylie Minogue, another pop queen who confounds the critics. Those types of voices are perfect for sexy, minor-key-dominant pop. Ask yourself if Christina Aguilera could have ever pulled off a song like Kylie's "Chocolate" or Britney's "Breathe On Me." Or even some of the new songs, like "(Drop Dead) Beautiful," "Trip to Your Heart," and "Trouble for Me." Only a singer with Britney's voice could have pulled those off. She is the essential ingredient in her music. Her songs wouldn't work in the hands of Katy Perry or Rihanna. Hers is one of the only voices in the industry that is not interchangeable with someone else. It's absolutely anything but generic.

And as for songwriting? Rihanna's "Loud" has no credits to her but her voice. Beyonce steals songwriting credits, for God's sake. But no one constantly criticizes them for their "lack of involvement" on their records — even though, as I've mentioned, Britney indeed has written or helped write a few of her big hits!

Is the reason that you people don't 'get' this that Britney doesn't care about promoting herself as the second coming, like Lady Gaga does? Thank God for it — the woman is as down-to-earth as it comes. She'd never go out there like Lady Gaga, talking about "giving birth to a new race" because of her cultural appeal. She is delightfully appealing as a person because she tries so hard to maintain some sense of normalcy. And my God, she was nearly destroyed by the media culture that created her — but she, unlike Elvis, unlike Whitney Houston, unlike Michael Jackson — came back and overcame her problems. She could have ended up destroyed like those other icons. She didn't. She came back to hit #1 again and again and again. She's had three #1s since her big comeback. It's absolutely amazing, and not enough credit is given to her for how much she's had to deal with and what she's overcome. Maybe she made herself a target for stupid media critics, but she's remained a real person throughout everything. She's just the whole freakin' pop package and I don't understand why this is so difficult to understand."

This album is bliss. The first one of hers that I play through from beginning to end.

So much variety yet all Britney!

I can't even list favs because they are all standout tracks to me. I gotta give love to Trip To Your Heart though. Ugh, that song just melts me...

Good job, once again, Britney!!!

Album Review: Britney Spears – Femme Fatale
“But she doesn’t write her own songs!” the naysayers sneer, as though this invalidates Britney Spears’s career as a singer.
It’s a ridiculous claim, of course. Not because it isn’t true—Britney’s never pretended that she crafts her own music–but because some of the greatest singers of the 20th century didn’t write their own material. I’m thinking Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, and Nina Simone, to name a few high-profile examples. Nobody would deny their artistry, which came not from the creation of original melody but rather from the way they imbued others’ music with their own signature spirit. These legends made the songs they sang their own, and that’s why they became legends in the first place.
Now, Britney Spears is no Nina Simone. But it’s foolish to disregard her albums simply because she didn’t write the hits herself. Britney’s success has always come from the way she sold the myth of her sincerity; when she commanded us to “hit me baby one more time,” she sounded like she meant it. We believed her; we bought into the Britney pop juggernaut, and what we’ve gotten out of this cultural transaction has been an impressive collection of modern pop classics, culminating in the flawed, mysterious, and magnificent Blackout.
Then came Circus, and sure, “Womanizer” and the title track did well on the Billboard charts. But the problem with that album was that for the first time, Britney sounded as convincing as a karaoke singer after a couple Valiums and a whiskey soda. Even on the global tour supporting the album, Britney seemed to be going through the motions of pop stardom. The music was catchy, but the presentation was more than a little sad and empty.
Which is why I’m delighted to report that she’s back, for real this time. Not only are the dozen tracks on Femme Fatale catchy and joyous, they’re also some of the most sonically interesting of her career. From the skeletal, piano-driven house of “How I Roll” to the Yelle-inspired whistling on “I Wanna Go” and the flower-power flute on closer “Criminal,” Britney and her producers have made an album that never tries for Top 40 radio accessibility but achieves it on the merits of its charms.
Even a track featuring will.i.am manages to avoid sounding obnoxious.
The most memorable aspect of Ms. Spears’s music, of course, has always been the hooks; on Femme Fatale, they’re massive. Opener “Till The World Ends” apes the refrain from 80s MTV mainstay “Tarzan Boy,” but Britney somehow makes the song’s wordless chanting sound infinitely more expansive than Baltimora ever could. “(Drop Dead) Beautiful” takes about twenty seconds to explode into an 808-backed bridge as pristine as the Golden Gate. And we’ve already discussed why lead single “Hold It Against Me” is so successful.
Don’t get me wrong—Femme Fatale isn’t a perfect album; “Seal It With A Kiss” and “Gasoline” are pat but forgettable. But Britney makes up for these momentary lags with plenty of gems; the synth-driven balladry of “Inside Out” and relentless rhythm of second single “Till The World Ends” are both destined to become fan favorites.
But none of these songs’ catchy qualities would matter if Britney didn’t sound like she cared. Fortunately for us, she sounds more passionate on this album than she has since “My Prerogative.” On the aforementioned will.i.am-assisted “Big Fat Bass,” she tells the listener that “you can be my bass,” and she makes it sound like the most important role we can fulfill. The snobs will keep on hating, but I for one am more than happy to oblige her
