Brokeback Mountain Question

My question:

The very last scene in the camper: Ennis opened the wardrobe, looked at the two shirts and said: "Jack... I swear..."

What does it mean? What does he want to say?

I think it can mean a lot of things and there's a thread somewhere here buried that discussed this.

The way I interpret it is the start of a sentence like "Jack I swear I didn't..." or something. I think it's Ennis catching himself making an apologetic or confessional statement to Jack and trailing off. The short story shows that before that, Ennis had another dream about Jack.

I think reading the short story will give it a lot of context for you to decide.

@ luminum

yeah, but I heard, the short story is not as good as the movie...

I interpret the scene differently. Could it be a reference to Jack's demand after a common life? Or is it a kind of oath... to hide himself or his gay life no more?

I personally find the short story to be much better than the movie. Don't knock it till you've tried it, you know. There's this beautiful scene that's in the movie, but really doesn't hit hard until you read what the inner memory really was during that scene or what it meant to one of the characters.

Well, I'll read it...
