Broncos fire Shanahan
Coach cut after team blows three-game lead, playoff spot

DENVER - Mike Shanahan has been fired as Denver Broncos coach after the team lost a three-game lead with three games to go in the AFC West.

Shanahan, 56, coached the Broncos since 1995, the second-longest tenure for a coach with one NFL team behind Tennessee's Jeff Fisher. He coached the Broncos to consecutive Super Bowl victories in 1998 and 1999 and compiled a record of 146-89 with the team.

This season, the Broncos had an 8-5 record but lost their final three, including a 52-21 defeat Sunday night in San Diego that gave the Chargers the division title.

He also was dismissed as director of football operations.
 Bye

And yet, Mr. Ralph Wilson, the owner of the Buffalo Bills, insists on holding on to Coach Dick Jauron, after the third straight losing season.....

Go figure.....

Shanahan never had much of a defense in Denver. And after 10 seasons of never finding a QB to match John Elway, he loses his job because of it. I'm sure Shanny has no interest in being an offensive coordinator, but I'd like Dick Jauron to make the phone call just in case.

Ralph decides to keep Jauron. I don't have a problem with that. I assume the contract extension is only for next year, and it's playoffs or bust for Jauron.

The Lions are going to go cheap on a new coach, so they might as well hire Jerry Gray. Since he was in Buffalo, I've thought he would make a good head coach.

I'm not a Shanahan fan, but I am a football fan. I'm pretty sure Shanahan will benefit from a change of scenery. There is no doubt this firing will inspire him and he will probably go to Cleveland and rebuild the Browns. That would be cool to see.

The Broncos were the epitome of a WTF team this year. You literally had NO idea how the team was going to do. They beat the Jets in New York and the Raiders in Oakland, but lost to Kansas City and Oakland at home. I think the main problem was those home losses to easy teams...

Sorry, my last post had pretty much nothing to do with this topic...I just wanted to point out the Lions achieving gold this year. I really only follow the Steelers in the NFL but I was kinda surprised that the Broncos fired Shanahan. I guess winning records aren't everything...

If that happens then the Broncs and the Browns will be switching coaches, most likely. Weird.
