With regard to prisons. It's only responsible for a society to incur a cost for incarcerating people, especially punitive long term incarceration. Having to pay encourages us to think about who is imprisoned and why.
North American Protestantism is hardly normative Christianity. Over half of Christians are Catholics whose experience of religion is vastly different.

I'm a Southerner I'm amazed that I had that lapse. Not just Protestants, but only low church fundies are Christians. I forget, I see so many of my Catholic/Episcopalian relatives praying to Jesus and calling him God that confusion sets in. Carry on.

Southern Baptist here! We too were raised to be nice to people like Methodists who aren't really Christians, but bake a mean Pecan Pie so we'll look the other way.
