Having a "nice" pit bull is not possible by training it. You can train it to be obedient and not attack people, but it is genetically aggressive and has high levels of adrenaline and even is very well trained it can still snap and biite someone if it gets upset, frustrated or misinterpretate something that someone does as an act of aggression. A pit bull, even a superbly trained one, will still represent a danger that , say, a cocker spaniel doesen't.

Are you an animal trainer? Because the trainer/breeder I know, who helped me train my dog, says differently.

I don't know why you call them scare quotes. I call them quotation marks or inverted commas and I use them to convey a distancing irony. A word 'park' usually denotes a restful, beautiful place but I'm suspecting that 'dog parks' are really dog toilets where dog owners can go to meet up with other dog owners.


(I'm thinking some dog owners might be as easy to provoke as their dogs when confronted by innocent questions)

Here, dog parks are regulated. They have to be big, like at least an acre (though the ones I know of are bigger than that), and have a limit on how many dogs can be there at once -- and the owners have to scoop and bag their poop. And a dog owner not paying attention to his/her dog can be fined.

And I hope my posts here do provoke you to consider there are others in the world who aren't dog lovers but who are obliged to suffer the nuisance of noise and excrement of those who are.

There's a way to deal with that complaint:

Know the dogs in your area, and who the owners are. If a dog poops in your yard or nearby, scoop the poop into an open, small paper bag, go knock on the door, and return it to them. If they're not home, put a note saying, "You dropped this" and leave it on the stoop.

And don't misunderstand the attributes of a breed. Pit bulls are not inherently aggressive, they're inherently loyal. I've met several pit bulls that are sweet and gentle, and there wasn't any over training involved, they just belong to sweet and gentle families. But every single one I know that belongs to some redneck is mean.

Good God that was a lot of blood!! But for some reason that wasn't as shocking to me as I thought it would be.

I actually love Pit Bulls but I don't think I could ever bring myself to own one. If they end up killing someone, it's my ass.

Fact is, dogs aren't born evil

Dogs are unpredictable. My grandparents had a Black Lab.Rottwieler mix. When he didn't know me that well he would bark aggressively when I knocked on the door. I was worried once when my nephew and niece were little that they would pull his tail and he would snap at them, but he never did, and never bit anyone.

My friends Rotty I love. The first time I went over his house I was a little nervous, but he was really cool and friendly and welcoming. After that every time I saw him I would bring him treats and I would leave them in my car trunk so I would always have them.

The only time he barks and runs around is when he sees or hears something on TV that agitates him. He has what I called yelled at me (barked and gotten close) and his daddy a few times, but that was only because I touched his hind leg which his daddy says is very sensitive. Also a few other times, but that's his way of yelling and saying stop it hurts. He's never snapped and tried to bite anyone. He rides with me and his daddy in my car, we take him for ice cream, we've taken him to the beach, we've taken him to pet shops, he is always well behaved. I've also let him around on his leash.

His daddy is going away on vacation for a week (I think) and I told him I would consider cowatching his dog but they are not allowed in my apartment. Also I fear the dog will freak out when he realizes his daddy is away for so long. Even if he were to keep him at his house and I went to walk him twice a day that would be a big commitment, and if something happened and he missed his daddy and got pissed off at me I might freak out, but I honestly think he would never bite me. He is gonna try another friend or if not the back up plan is to board him in a kennel. Either way I plan to visit him wherever he is.

I watched my friends German Sheppard when I was 12 and he stayed in the basement and I was sitting at the top of the stairs with him and I went to touch his gums and he snapped his head up and scared me, but he didn't try to bite me. If a dog wants to bite you they will. This was a neighbor friend's dog and during the day he would stay in his own back yard. One day he got out from under the fence and ran away, luckily my father found him a few hours later.

An aggressive dog is like an aggressive person. People who beat each other are the same as dogs that attack you. It's how you were raised as well as in part your natural instinct.

My morning newspaper has the headline Canine aggression on the rise: The number of dog attacks on people in the state has increased threefold since 2007.

Now that's a big increase. I guess the number of thoughtless dog owners has similarly increased.

A vast majority of dog attack cases (I'd say about 95%) on Judge Judy and People's Court involve pitbulls. Most cases involve pitbulls and other dogs, but there are a number of cases involving the pitbulls and people. The owners refuse to take responsibility for them and actually blame the victims, either animal or human. The most common defence is that the victims must have been doing something to coerce their dogs to attack.
