Bugchasing: fact or myth?

When I was in my late teens and early 20s, I remember seeing people waste away quickly, faces covered with lesions, and being told "don't let this happen to you". It was a gut-powerful message that I remember to this day.

I haven't seen anything like that in years. I only know a few HIV+ people, and about the only difference between them and me is how many prescriptions we take. Yes, the sword of Damocles is over their head, but how long do people live with HIV without getting any symptoms whatsoever? Ten, fifteen, twenty? And from the vantage point of a naive 18- to 25-year-old gay guy, by that point, their life is over anyway.

This is possibly the stupidest post I've ever read on JUB.

You seriously don't think you're at risk of getting HIV from bareback topping all the time? Think again and get tested, there's a high chance that you have already gotten aids and spreaded it to others.

It's possible to find guys who've gotten infected by topping, but not easy. On the other hand throw a stone in some neighborhoods like Chelsea or Hell's Kitchen (in NYC) or the Castro (SF) and you'll probably hit a guy who got pozzed by being a bareback bottom. I never said becoming poz from topping was impossible - just difficult/unlikely...

I get tested regularly - last test was 3/3/08 and it was neg.

It's also NOT "becoming popular" this is the first I've ever heard of it.

My point saying bug chasing was becoming popular wasn't to say most people are doing it - more that no one used to admit to do it and now people are... It is a minority, but in a certain subculture it's now OK to admit to bug chasing. That didn't used to be the case. Something has changed...

Purposely getting a disease that you know will kill you is one of the stupidest things you can do. It almost seems like you're a bug chaser yourself and is trying to encourage other people on this site to do the same.

No, I'm not encouraging anyone to be a bug chaser...

If you read the thoughts of the bug chaser I mentioned he said he's OK with what he's doing because he's of an age (mid 40s) where he's starting to see friends die of routine/senseless things. To him he's thinking he's just as likely to die of something "normal" than of AIDS...

But let's put this "stupidity" in context... People smoke which leads to cancer which can lead to death. Yes, there's even legislation saying how bad smoking is and places you can't do it, but there's no outrage despite the fact that it's the equivalent of bug chasing.

Same with eating fatty foods which can lead to Type 2 diabetes which can kill you. The list can go on and on. Ask yourself why you've bought into the fact that bug chasing is different than smoking or overeating? We can argue about how they might be different points along the same scale - but why so much outrage and venom about barebacking and bug chasing?

This bugchasing madness is just that, Madness. People like this are a threat to the human population.

And these so-called gift givers. If anyone ever tried to intentionally give me AIDS, I'd torture them to death. Death is too good for people who would do something so vile to another person.

This is exactly why I don't do casual sex.

This is exactly why I don't do casual sex.

With enough STDs out there and now bugchasing, it takes the joy out of sex.

Living in Broward County, which has been top 5 in the newest AIDS cases for the past two years, being a male minority that has sex with males, is enough reason for me to keep it in my pants. Most friends of mine (straight or gay) don't get tested and have casual sex, very unsettling.

I'm always using protection, but just the chance that I meet someone PURPOSELY trying to infect me? Hell no.

God forbid that tomorrow I die from a gunshot, being ran over, or in a fire, but that's a small chance of happening. I visit the doctor every two to three months, so I'll know if I get cancer or not.

You're more likely to die from an STD by having unprotected sex with strangers than cancer or diabetes anyways. The comparison is ridiculous.

I live life with precaution, because life is a gift and I value it. I have goals to lead a happy, healthy, successful life and to accomplish my dreams.

I'll be damn and would never be a cum dump, get infected with HIV, and be on ARVs for the rest of my life. Some will STILL go out there and fuck, getting infected with different strains of the virus. It's a race to death and I feel no sympathy.

I know HIV+ people who made the mistake of unsafe sex. It changed their lives. Bugchasers seek to be in their position and it's a slap in the face of those who've passed from AIDS and those who wish to take it back.
