I am not referring to the verbal taunts about weight, freckles or having a "funny" name. I am talking about physical assault. being tripped, punched, smacked and so on. I saw a you tube vid recently about this sort of activity taking place in public schools. The question was "how to stop it?"
Having a zero tolerance policy is a bit like a gun free zone. Those who break the policy have little regard about the consequences. Usually the victim suffers repercussions as well as the perp.

At the magic age of 17 or 18 a bully might be surprised that hitting another is illegal. After spending 6 or 7 years of punching and hitting a weaker student with no repercussions now he will be held accountable.

My thought is that striking another human just because one likes to hurt others should be punishable at all ages. Yup, hit that other kid and spend a week in juvie. Sounds sever, but it is far more sever to wake up wondering if that bully will corner you in school again.

Cops don't want to get involved, they have serious crimes to deal with. Think of how the courts would be flooded with little punks who "merely" gave some boy a black eye or bloody nose.
Make no mistake, if I hit, punch, kick my neighbor (or take his lunch money) I will do some time. So why not the kid that seems to take delight in ruining another's childhood?
 
A lot of people will blame it on the parents. No. It's the parents who turn their backs or defend their child that are the problem. You see it all the time on court programmes like Judge Judy or The People's Court, and it's those people who bitch the most when they have to pay for some kid's glasses.

It's also the fault of school systems which choose to ignore the problem.

There's a video going viral at the moment of an attack on a school employee by a 17-year-old student much larger than the woman kicking and punching her unconscious because she took his Nintendo Switch away from him in class. Fortunately, he was 'taken down' and held until police arrived. The employee was taken to hospital with serious injuries and the student was taken into custody and held on $1 million bail.

I got badly physically bullied by two guys in Grade 9, because I was friends with the one guy's girlfriend.

He engaged some muscle from his posse. And when I sought assistance from the guidance counsellor....I got NOTHING.

But Karma is Karma and Paul Waterman was decapitated in a motorcycle accident about a decade later and for all I know, the guy he got to punch me out while the other two held me is still in prison.

It is all about the parents. Except when you also have a psychopath as a child.

The good news is that my friend Debbie ditched by the end of Grade 9 and he was expelled for some other reason.
 
^^^^^I beat the crap out of our high school bully in front of all his jock buddies. He was flicking my ears on the bus in the morning and "called me out" after school.

I didn't even get a scratch. Poor guy was asking for his mommy in front of his jock friends at the end.
 
As a fraction of our youth become inured to violence, we're going to continue to see juveniles prosecuted as adults. No matter how many reasons or excuses we have for their violence, the bottom line is that it is over the line and unacceptable. When youth commits some horrible violence, as a teen, a couple of years of juvenile detention is not the appropriate punishment.

It goes back to the artificial perpetuation of childhood in Western societies. That's all well and good until your mother is killed, or a child is beaten or tortured. Immature brain or no, it just doesn't fly to claim that the youth "didn't understand" the consequences of his actions. He understood. Did he understand "fully"? Probably not, but he understood enough, and he didn't care.

A fraction will be written off. It's as simple as that.
 
I forgot to mention that I think bullies are actually cowards and they hope no one stands up to them.

To be fair, a fraction of our youth has always been inured to violence. Same with a fraction of our adults and our elders.

And a much larger fraction was and is inured to violence in other places and times. We in 21st-century North America are relatively lucky by global and historical standards.

Yes, I agree that is possible. But, being an abstract quality, there is no real data on it. The cultures that accept or encourage brutality certainly never keep stats on the acts their youth commit. So, it's all speculative.

It's easier to point to broad prejudices against women, or gays, or minorities, or religions, without reference to the numbers or objectors, or the hatred being from a vocal or ensconced few.
 
Personally, I feel that gym classes should be replaced with self defense classes. I as a parent enrolled our son in a class due to him being bullied. He gained some self confidence (which fends off many bullies) and was not afraid to throw a punch if necessary.
 
We had 3 inches of snow the other day and they gave the little darlings off of school. And right after a 10 day winter recess.

Young people are being coddled.
 
I once heard a parent say "that's just what kids do. You can't do anything about it". This indifference is shocking. You can do something about it.
 
Yeah it did get physical in CATHOLIC SCHOOL! It started off as paper balls progressed to pencils pens bottles of glue text books all led by one little snotty cunt Stefanie! One day she threw her hardcover mathbook at me and I had had enough I stood up went to the window lifted up the screen and pitched it into the alley, in fact I collected all the shit the little bitch and her cronies were throwing at me and chucked it out the window their pens notebooks everything ZERO fucks given, Teachers in my grade did nothing the principal did nothing finally we were nearing the end of 7th grade and I had all I could take I told my teacher Look I have put up with her and her little posses shit for as long as I have Im a good student and have brought this up numerous times, these are the kids I want to be with in 8th grade here are the ones I dont she followed it to the last kid and as luck would also have it I and the kids who were nice to me got the fun teacher and the little brats got the teacher who while fun wouldnt you get away with any bullshit! Its my sincerest hope that she gets well its what the tv show law and order SVU mainly deals with it ends in -aped and her ability to have kids is taken away no child should have to endure the sheer evilness of this bitch as a mother she was even giving her supoosed best friends phone number out on AOL chatrooms and getting perverts calling this poor girls house it got so bad she changed schools so my hopes for her are on point with her actions

I can only think of one physical bully in school. I had what felt like several verbal bullies that liked to bully the fat kid by saying fatty, or pork fatty, or fatso.

I don't remember if it was during Junior High (now called Middle School) or High School. Both "school buildings" were connected by a long hallway and there were teachers that taught both levels of math and music. So the students went to the teachers room rather than the teacher coming to the other school building. Our math class got out 2 minutes before the students in the other classrooms because we needed to walk over to the other building for our next class. So the hallways were empty except for our class. My bully would come up behind me and grab me in a bear hug, or choke hold around the neck whenever we might be the last 2 out of the classroom. So there weren't many, if any, witnesses.

Once i had enough of this treatment, when I was in his choke hold, I was not strong enough to pull his grip off so I dug my finger nails into his arm as hard as I could. I found out later that I drew blood and he showed me the skin scabs the next day (under where I nails had scraped). I probably learned this from my sister(s) who always had long nails they would use against me. That was the last time the bully touched me.

Thankfully I was never bullied but I made damn sure through High School, College and even to this day I will always stand up for someone who is getting picked on, weather it is by using physical force or simply just standing with the person getting bullied and staring down the ass-hat tormenting them.
