A Seattle Metro bus driver was stabbed to death by a passenger today (18 Dec 24) in the University District.
I stopped riding Metro in 2022 after dangerous encounters with armed passengers.
Metro bus drivers are not safe and the city can't find new drivers due to safety concerns.

I can afford to travel without public transit, not everyone is so fortunate.

Wow that's awful... seems like a lot of bad people on this this earth to do such a thing

There's something about public transit in Seattle that brings out the worst in people. I noticed how quickly things went bad by the year 2020.
I'm so grateful to have the means to avoid riding the bus, but it's awful to be a bus drivers these days.

Try riding on a crowded NYC bus.

That's terrible. I'm surprised they haven't installed protected cabins. It's up to the employer to provide a safe workplace, or it is where I live anyway. Maybe in America you have to pay for your own safe workplace out of your own pocket.

Thought the same. In Europe, it's very common that drivers are protected by the cabins that serve a physical barrier between them and passengers.

It's probably the same old story: cheaper to pay out lawsuits, damages, and fines than to take the steps necessary to protect the public

I don't drive, so I ride transit everywhere at all hours. I've ridden in Seattle, Tacoma, Spokane, and Portland in the northwest, and dozens of other American, Canadian, and European cities, and Mexico City.
This isn't anything new, but drunkenness, drugs, and mental illness contribute mightily to violence. I wish there was a surefire solution.
I'm saddened by this murder.

Seattle is losing its tourism appeal one day after another. I hope some grad student does a paper on how much air time this poor driver gets compared to all the lionizing of that United Heathcare CEO.

The transit workers union has to demand bus driver safety, including transit police, as the city struggles to keep the drivers we have. This situation effects tourist, and everyone suffers when the tourists stay away. It's already unsafe for the working poor to shop via bus as any visible packages or shopping bags marks the holder as a target. It has turned into "every rider for himself" as there is no bus security, not even for bus drivers.
