I was hoping you guys would give me some feedback on a computer I was looking at buying.

Compaq Presario SR5030NX Desktop

Compaq Presario SR5050NX Desktop

Are there any significant differences in those? I'm trying to ensure that I get 1 gig in RAM because it could be years before I buy another one, and I'd like to try and get a good one now. The lightscribe DVD/CD burner looks interesting.

So, what do you guys think? Feel free to make suggestions. I appreciate any input!

Thanks!

NOOOOOOOO COMPAQ! I used to own one and HATED it. Plus, my old school district had a contract with them... yep, hated those too.

I would go with either Dell or a Mac. They may be a tad more expensive, but I've never had a tad of trouble with either of my Dells, nor anyone that I know with a Mac (other than having a few problems running a file or two here or there).

This is only my opinion though.

My sister had a Compaq - huge piece of junk. Me, I have a Mac. I'm on my third one in 14 years. Never had a problem with any of them. Plus, the new ones can run windows, if you need it. I have Office for the Mac, and that is about all the windows stuff I need.

We have Dells at work - not very many problems, just seems like Windows XP doesn't move as fast as Mac OS X. Just my $0.02

Honestly, I've not heard much good regarding Compaq's lately. I would suggest looking at Dell's web site. Do you have a price range you are wanting to stay within?

I'll take a second look at a Dell. I had no idea that Compaq had such a bad reputation. Their light-scribe dvd/cd drive looked pretty interesting.

Aside from Dell, I'd love to know of any reputable websites to purchase computers. I'm not married to the notion of buying the computer in a store. I imagine you get better prices online?

The best computers I've had over the years were my Gateways and generic store ones. I know a number of people swear by Dell, but I had the worst experience with them.

I'm now on my second Gateway, purchased 2 years ago and it is still the best one I've ever gotten.

I personally wouldn't go with Compaq/HP nor Gateway. I know too many people that have had problems with them. My first laptop was a Compaq and it literally melted. Yeah, Compaq says that's normal wear and tear after two years of usage? Suuuure. I've had this Dell laptop for a little over four years and it's still good to go. My sister has a Dell. My tower in my apartment is a Dell. My parents have Dell towers and laptops. Yeah, you get the gist. In all essence, if you have problems with your Dell computer, they'll try their hardest to fix it over the phone. If they can't, they'll send a tech out in two business days and get it rectified.

I honestly swear by Dell, if not building it myself. That and you can get discounted rates if you go through a University. And also, try Dell's Outlet site. They have people who have cancelled their orders which are being resold without them being opened. You can get a pretty decent price in there. Otherwise, if you shop in their customized catalog -- putz around and you'll strike deals here and there.

AzianBoi, thanks for the tip on the Dell Outlet website! I took a look there and found some real good deals. All of their stuff seems to come with the full warrenty.

Compaq = Never Ever Ever Ever
Build Your Own = Best Way To Go
Dell = Best Way To Go If You Can't Build Your Own

I know how you feel, but I honestly wouldn't let LightScribe color or sway your opinion too much about a PC system. It's not as "all that" as the marketers might lead you to believe, and if you're really after it, you can buy internal and external burners these days fairly cheaply that have this feature. The blanks can cost inexplicably more than regular discs, and you're stuck with a...well, monochrome sorta thing. Check out lightscribe.com and Wikipedia's entry. It's true the discs might look a bit better than handwritten scribbles, but there are devoted CD/DVD label printers out there that do nice color stuff on either preaffixed blanklabel surface discs or some people do them right on the metallic disc surface itself.

Apple is definitely the way to go. They take all of their software into consideration, and build a machine accordingly, that will work at speeds rivaling a PC of the same age, years down the road. That aside, the OS X software is soo much more intuitive to use than Windows, it makes just about any task seem too simple. And, this is coming from a life-long Windows person. At school, I occasionally have to dip back into using Windows for a class or two- but if not my MacBook- I would much rather be using my 1998 vintage iMac G3, that still runs laps around a lot of these newer Windows-based computers. Customer service is the best as well. I urge you to take this into consideration when buying a new machine, because you will not be dissapointed.

Many of the myths about Apple being incompatible with everything- are simply untrue, and have been untrue since the development of OS X nearly 7 years ago. (Personally, Microsoft Office Suite for OS X works much better than it's Wintel counterpart- Macs can crunch numbers with the best of 'em ;) )

And- on the rare occasion you feel it necessary- you can boot Windows on your Apple computer- See the difference between the two- and see how, even Windows runs better and faster than it does on any other PC manufacturer, when run on a Mac.

I am in the same situation as you number2. I've been with windows since before 3.1 and converted to a Mac in February this year and am now a bit of an evangelist for them. I have however learned on here that a mac evangelist is regarded in the same way as an over zealous catholic is in the Gay community so I duck back behind the parrapit rapidly. I now have a better understanding of what Linux and OSX are up against. I might as well join the flat earth society ;)

Please don't react to this guys it's tongue in cheek and late in the evening. Just ignore me. I'm bored.

My Opinion:

Compaq - Wouldn't know. It's been years since I've really used one but I do have a friend who has a Compaq laptop PC and he hasn't had any problems at all. In any case I would tend to go with the general notion of just staying away from them with the other comments here.j

HP - Same company as Compaq. However, there must be differences in the hardware because why would they sell the exact same hardware with a different name? I have 2 HP PC's..... my laptop a DV9000t, and my partners is an HP Media Center PC m7760n. My previous 2 PC's before that were HP and I loved them except for the tons of crap they want you to load on them when you re-install the OS. For one thing I HATE symantec, and every manufacturer seems to want to force you to load it. There is a lot of self-updating software also which I simply don't need because I know my way around a PC fairly well. So, I like HP when I can do a clean install of windows on it and pick and choose my own software options. I haven't had any issues with HP and the new PC case and hardware layout is fairly decent and easy to work with. I also like the fact that you don't have to call HP for support if you need it, you can just go to their website and their online chat / help is fantastic!!

Dell - I guess my opinion is aside from the norm here. I have a friend that is on her 3rd or 4th Dell PC and she has had nothing but problems with them. When she has issues and has had to call support, they tell her the same thing everytime..... "You need for format your HD". She could have forgotten a password or something, but they always tell her that shit. I don't get it.

Of course, the last time I dealt with Dell phone support was over a year ago and they may have changed. As far as hardware...... that is what my friend always had problem with on her Dell. Power Supply fried, HD failing, she had to have her motherboard replaced 2 times, etc. So I am very leery of Dell.

If you want to cover all of your bases by the opinions in this forum, you may want to avoid Compaq, HP, Dell, and Gateway. Maybe you should just go with Acer or Sony but I have heard "not so glowing" reviews of Sony PC's as well.

However, the techies seem to like Dell..... so maybe consider that.

The views expressed in this post are those of the owner and are not necessarily the views of a sane person..............LOL!! Call me crazy......won't be the first time.

PEACE!!

^^I was surprised by the lack of support Dell Support actually provided, not to mention the hour long waits to actually speak with a human...

I guess I'm the only one that likes Gateway. Nothing but good luck with the two I've owned. Short wait time on Support (I think the longest I've waited is 10 minutes). They also had a better educator deal than Dell.
