bye bye Tower Records :(

They are all closing everywhere. The original one is a few miles from me and it's closing also. That store has been bought by some other company and will eventually reopen as something else. But they are all closing. it's been on the news here for months.

In england, we're quite lucky. We have play.com. Not sure if it's available to America... basically, everything's about 20% cheaper.

Mind you, from what I can tell America is cheaper than England.

The Tower Records closed today in Phoenix for good. I did pick up "Making Love" for $4.00. Anyone remember that flick?

I went to my favorite Tower yesterday and all CDs were $1.95 or less, with buy the 4th, get the 5th for $0.01. I bought 10 CDs for $17-$18. I went again today (its last day in business), and all CDs were reduced to $0.50 with the 5th for $0.01 (I bought 5 more this time). I didn't know that when I went up to pay, so i was pleasantly surprised that my total was only a little over $2 total.

I'm gonna miss Tower. I'll have to check if my other local store is still open, but I doubt it.

Last I heard, the Tower Records store in Seattle was having huge clearance sales...maybe I should go. Then again, why drive over an hour to Seattle when I can still get the music even cheaper online?

It might be because of downloading, but I for one will not stop buying CDs. Music downloads, no matter legal or illegal, are almost always sub par in quality. Music stores tend to top out at okay quality, sometimes you can find WAVs on some illegal downloading sites, but they're rare. I almost always (98% of the time) buy the CD so that I can create some actually decent files to put on my iPod.

Shoot wish I had caught this thread earlier-I am sorry to hear that Tower is closing....does anyone know what the actual closing date is for the one near Palisades NY?

^^ idk were your looking but almost all music i download is full cd quality its called

music blogs
musc forums (such as starsvip.com) a great place for pop & R&B

mp3 sites are mostly useless they always have everythnig advertised as free but then want you to pay so idk were you go cause like almost every mp3 & cd up dfor downloaad is most likely cd quality but unless it is a rip or a it is lesser quality for a reason so i would start oging to new places to download lol

If it is an MP3, it is not CD quality. By the very nature of music compression, it is not CD quality. Granted, a lot of people can't really tell the difference, so it makes no difference to them. I can tell the difference though. When you're taking something that has 1411 kbps of data, and squeezing it down to on average 128 kbps, up to a maximum of 320 kbps, you ARE losing something.

That said, I've started making the transition to SACD, and there is an even bigger difference there. Remarkable, really. :-)

i for one like collecting cds myself i hope the cds stay with us i dont want the cds to go next . :(

Hell, I haven't even been able to rid myself of the last of my audio cassettes! !oops!

I'm almost there, though...
