It is difficult to find this link in this thread so I'm posing it again:

It really is shocking to see how much this has cost.

Re: CA Prop 8-Gay Marriage Ban - news and alerts

Btw a nice fact to throw around when someone says "that's not how marriage has been in history":

"There is no such thing as a traditional family. Families have taken every shape imaginable throughout history. The most common marriage form in history was one man and many women.

Marriage has been constantly changing. The idea of one man one woman nuclear family - that's a pretty rare family form in history."

So says Stephanie Coontz, Professor of History and Family Studies, Evergreen State College.

From [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nQmAGBbOmas&feature=related]Penn and Teller: Bullshit - Family Values 1/3[/ame]

But then again, the mormons might be happy to hear that....

(And of course, if by history they only mean the US then you can always point out interracial marriage...)

i actually had a really cool converstation with my aunt out in CA. i pretty much asked if she had paid any attention to it and what her views on it are. she is definitely voting AGAINST this amendment. i wanted to thank her so much.

Re: CA Prop 8-Gay Marriage Ban - news and alerts

Our side has been playing the commercials. Dkonfrost told me that he hears radio commercials. And I just noticed an advertisment on a web site for a local newspaper:

I have some friends that went to a dog show in Riverside County today. They were happily suprised to see many No On Prop 8 signs in that area as well as a large billboard. That area is one of the heaviest conservative areas so it was very nice to hear that. :)

(***crossing fingers and toes***)

Thank you Stacy! (*8*) I just got an email from our very own Senator telling people to vote no on 8:

Distractions and distortions. I know from personal experience that these are the tools of those who practice the politics of fear and division.

On Election Day, I hope you will reject these mean-spirited tactics and join me in voting No on Proposition 8.

Prop 8 is a statewide ballot initiative that would put discrimination against same-sex couples into the California State Constitution. It is unfair, unnecessary, and wrong.

A broad coalition of Californians has come together to defeat Proposition 8. And they need your help now.

Join the No On 8 campaign in their efforts to stop discrimination in California. Click here to add your voice today!

Prop 8 will eliminate rights. Those are the facts. But that's not what you'll see on TV from the supporters of Prop 8. The Yes on 8 campaign is spending tens of millions of dollars to distort the facts and hide the true purpose of this divisive initiative.

The supporters of Prop 8 are making outlandish claims about what will happen if Prop 8 fails to pass. These are just distortions to distract voters from the fact that Prop 8 singles out a group of Californians for unfair treatment.

The only way we can fight against these extreme tactics is to make sure the No On 8 campaign has the support it needs to tell voters the truth about Prop 8. Click here to join the campaign today!

I know from experience that to beat the smear machine, you need grassroots supporters to help fight back. The No on 8 campaign has a statewide grassroots effort underway with house parties, phone banks and rallies across the state to spread the word about this unfair initiative.

Please take just a minute of your time to stand up to the politics of fear. Join the No on 8 campaign today!

Please join me and Vote No on 8. Thank you so much for your help and for your support of equality.

In Friendship,

Barbara Boxer
U.S. Senator

Wow...simply, and totally, wow!

Is this getting any traction in the news cycle in California at all?

For that matter, how much exposure did the blackmail letters get in the California media? I know that a TV station in San Diego ran a story, but did anyone else?

Noelie has a No on 8 siggie logo which I may borrow/steal, if I can figure out how...

Re: CA Prop 8-Gay Marriage Ban - news and alerts

I'd love to see an ad where they get a bunch of regular people who talk about a normal day, wake up , work, go home to the partner, have dinner, go to sleep. Then it asks which of the people talking were in a gay marriage, and asks why is it even important to know?

Re: CA Prop 8-Gay Marriage Ban - news and alerts

more than 60 million dollars spent, a lot of it to get this passed. Just think if these people put as much effort into helping the poor and education.

Re: CA Prop 8-Gay Marriage Ban - news and alerts

A friend called me just now to tell me that she just listened to a radio talk show that spent an hour talking about how dishonest prop 8 supporters have been. ..| She was just moving the dial around and stumbled upon it so she is not sure what station it was.

Re: CA Prop 8-Gay Marriage Ban - news and alerts

Just wondering, how did the people in your class respond to what you said?

Re: CA Prop 8-Gay Marriage Ban - news and alerts

That's great to hear! I have become much more confident in the past few days that this will fail!

Re: CA Prop 8-Gay Marriage Ban - news and alerts

Wow, that is exploiting kids. Do they actually think that's going to get them support? Too bad for them that kids can't vote!

I guess they're really scraping the bottom of the barrel at this point!
