  • Hi Guest - Did you know?
Hot Topics is a Safe for Work (SFW) forum.

california, are you prepared ???

Another disaster movie! I saw the trailer for this yesterday.
We can just add it to the pile.

Fuck no, The Rock was bad enough in Hercules without watching this epic load of bollocks.

My anxieties about 9/11 are really profitable!

ummm its about earthquake proof buildings.
Are buildings in California earthquake proof like in Japan ???

Quite frankly, the earthquake scene in Superman was more exciting. There's a lot to be said for special effects over CGI.

Yeah great--I was thinking of moving to LA---and I'm going there next week. Well this would solve the water problem.:p

You can tell that to the people of Nepal.
All i want to hear is, are the buildings in California safe ??

I throught this was about the California drought

That teaser "are you hurt, are you hurt" is a very bad script writing.

I'm talking about current buildings in California.
Are they strong enough for 8+ scale earthquakes ?

I actually love disaster and zombie movies. Never get tired of them.

My boyfriend hates disaster movies, though. I will definitely drag him to this one.

yes. Building codes are quite strong here. My husband is an architect and most buildings have had to go through rigorous amounts of work to retro fit them to current standards.

OK so... on top of my husband being an architect and knowing a bit about building codes... one of my best friends is a geologist for NASA. He tells me that all the doomsday movies about earthquakes in California are pretty much the opposite of how anything would happen.

The idea that California would "break off and drop into the ocean" is laughable.

This is a disaster movie and they're supposed to be entertainment. Nothing will really happen this way.

there isn't much that's strong enough for an 8+ earthquake. But yes, most buildings in California are able to withstand quite a bit of shaking.

Speaking of earthquakes, the biggest earthquake in recorded history in the US happened right here in Illinois. The rumbling lasted for 3 days straight. The energy involved was so enormous that it caused the Mississippi river to flow backward for 3 days. Fortunately, this state was all grasslands back then. If the same magnitude earthquake happen today in Illinois, you can say good bye to Chicago.
