  • Hi Guest - Did you know?
Hot Topics is a Safe for Work (SFW) forum.

california, are you prepared ???

You can tell that to the people of Nepal.
All i want to hear is, are the buildings in California safe ??

most of the places in Nepal are just rocks kept together with mortar. Very poor countries have horrible building codes. Much like why so many people were killed in Haiti in the poor areas... they lived in houses made with sticks and rocks and mud and scrap pieces of wood.

Haha, slow day at work today?

We voted yesterday to suspend our project until our contractor get their act together. That's why I'm here now LOL. At least I don't get laid off like the laborers. Just sitting around in my office waiting for the contractor to submit another project plan so I can sign the damn thing and get the project going again. I think I'll go BBQ for lunch today.

When I posted that it was 20-after-7 in the morning.

And where are you?

Chicago. You can't be that far behind time...

it may have been 8:20. either way, I was still in bed having my coffee.

the point is that California has some pretty strong anti-earthquake building codes because we get a lot of earth quakes.

Ya, I know.

My boyfriend and I want to move the hell out of Chicagoland and to somewhere nicer. California and Florida are our 2 top contenders. We're leaning toward Florida. California is really nice, too. We won't go anywhere until he gets his accounting degree and bring in the dough anyway. May be we'll decide to go to Cali by then. Who knows.

San Andreas is a fault not a divergent plate boundary. In either case, such a change would take millions of years. While there have been some dramatic shifts after earthquakes, we're talking in terms of feet not miles.

Speaking of earthquakes, the biggest earthquake in recorded history in the US happened right here in Illinois. The rumbling lasted for 3 days straight. The energy involved was so enormous that it caused the Mississippi river to flow backward for 3 days. Fortunately, this state was all grasslands back then. If the same magnitude earthquake happen today in Illinois, you can say good bye to Chicago.

That same earthquake was also felt in Saskatchewan!

I thought San Andreas was a fictional place in the GTA universe. Heaven forgive us. I'm a Brit.

Ah that's fine. I used to think Worcestershire was just a sauce, it wasn't until later when I found out it was a place as well :-)
