Not sure if many Europeans wander into this forum but worth a go anyway.

As many in the EU will know the Lisbon Treaty is in the process of being ratified by the member states. The people of Ireland have had the unique opportunity to vote on this Treaty and we voted NO. But that was obviously the wrong answer because here we are again having another vote on the same Lisbon Treaty. So please vote in the poll the way you would if given the opportunity.

Don't you mean you rejected the Treaty establishing a Constitution for Europe?

We (The Netherlands) rejected that too, because the EU government has too much power and no responsibility and has become an anti-democratic monster.

If Ireland is anything like the US, you will keep voting until you approve the treaty.

There will not be a vote after that to rescind the treaty.

It would appear that the Czechs are also a fly in the ointment, in regards to the European Constitution.

I would hazard a guess that the Irish vote is more related to the unpopularity of their current government, than a test of the waters on Irish support for the European Constitution.

EU leaders are said to be furious that the Czech Republic is planning to delay signing the Lisbon treaty for up to six months even if the Irish vote "yes" in their referendum next month.

Well i voted NO in the referendum but it gets passed with a "resounding yes".

Kinda strange that the Irish people get 2 chances to vote on it and the rest of the european people get no chance.

And Tony Blair better not get this President of the European Council job of "representing the EU in international forums", The Irish were for far too long represented by a British prime minister when the country was under direct rule from London.

(sorry about the i don't know option missing in the poll)

You mean the same Tony Blair, born in Edinburgh of an Irish mother, who during his childhood years spent his every Summer holiday staying with cousins in County Donegal. The same Tony Blair who married a Catholic girl from Liverpool (that other capital city of Ireland), and has converted to Catholicism. I would suggest that Tony is more Irish, than the Irish. After all the Irish invited him to address the Irish parliament in recognition of his pro Irish sympathies.

The same Tony Blair, who along with former Irish PM Bertie Aherne managed to engineer the end of the IRA terrorist campaign in Northern Ireland? I also note the involvement in progressing the Irish peace process, of Bill Clinton and the wonderful George Mitchell.

Yep that's the one!

I should imagine that having an honorary Irishman in such a role, would even be appealing to Sinn Fein voters. I recognise that Sinn Fein campaigned enthusiastically for a no vote. Clearly the Irish voter was not listening to Sinn Fein.

Sinn Féin has pretty small influence overall, more in the border regions and even they voted yes so you're right not many were listening to sinn féin.

I would like to see Mary Robinson become president of the council. Former UN high commissioner for human rights. Fairly well-known by the world leaders. Has the advantage of being from a neutral country that hasn't invaded anywhere. But then i'm not too sure what the president will actually do. I suspect not alot will noticeably change with ratification the Lisbon treaty.

I have much respect for Mary Robinson, but she does not possess the experience or international appeal of Tony Blair.

Tony Blair will start from scratch and develop his role. Assuming he is offered the job, and accepts the position. Tony Blair has the advantage of being well known on the world stage, and still influential in certain quarters. The United States, France and Germany would prefer Tony Blair over another candidate.

The European Union's influence on the life of the ordinary citizen would appear distant, and even remote. But that influence is growing, and in my opinion is positive in assisting the growth of a more humane society.

Yes, I am an idealist.
