Camera Lens VR help

I bought a new lens with Vibration Reduction. The lens came with an on/off switch. The lens didn’t come with a manual and I can’t find one.


My question is there a reason why I would turn it off. Does it use my battery power or something?

you turn to off when using a tripod because VR is for hand held.
You turn to on when not using a tripod.

No battery power but some sort of motor inside controlling the VR system.

Some VR add a little bit of lag to the trigger mechanism so
if you have really short exposure times .. deactivate it.
If you are using a tripod the VR might try to compensate not existent movement (and also delay the trigger) - deactivate it.
And last but not least .. if you are moving (panning) your camera to take a pic of a moving object such as a bicycle or car the VC will make it look very weird.

Both of the above are correct, but in addition to that, the documentation for my Nikon VR lenses warns that VR should be turned off before the camera is turned off, or before the lens is dismounted from the camera body, or it can cause the small lens elements that make up the VR system to chatter. By the way I tried that site. They only have the manual for my lens w/o VR. I'm still trying to find one for VR.
