More evidence of a police state at California Universities. Something has to be done.

Campus Cops Brutalize Peaceful Students Protesting Tuition Hikes at UC Riverside

Students at UC Riverside worried about past and future fee hikes attended a Regents meeting last Thursday to voice their concerns. However, despite the rights of attendees to a democratic, open-to-the-public meeting, students say they were summarily silenced—and that protesters outside the meeting were brutally attacked by police with batons and shot with non-lethal bullets—a point that went unmentioned in most reports, but one clearly backed up by video. Marc Lombardo, one of the student protesters in attendance, told AlterNet:

Something has to be done.

Yes. These protesters have gotten out of hand. What ever happened to dialogue, and being cordial with one another?

Instead, almost every week, somebody just wants to protest. And it's costing taxpayers too. Look what the "Occupy L.A." did to downtown Los Angeles. It costed $3 million dollars, and that doesn't include the costs to fix up the City Hall park after the Occupiers destroyed it.

The ironic thing is that some of you guys will blame police no matter what. If protesters start beating each other, and the police don't intervene, you guys would complain. When the police do intervene to keep order, then that's "police brutality."

What should the police do, when protesters are causing chaos? Serve them cookies and milk?

Gimme a break. Please....

^^ Says no violence so the LA Times is part of the conspiracy...

I only saw five pieces by none too widespread media outlets.. only two mentioned violence against students...

This is odd.. I dont really qualify it as some far flung conspiracy yet but I will be interested in the outcome of this story in the media?

Although if you go to the heart of the protest... students demanding state paid schools not increase cost to offset losses of tax monies to the state and therefore cuts to school budgets...

Do they not read enough to understand California is barely alive and cannot afford the status quo?

So, the asshats (students) decide to dismantle a barricade and and laughably chant "peaceful protest" while menacing officers with a 6' portion of that barricade. The officers forcibly take the barricade back from the asshats. They push them back out of their immediate space and this is brutal, how? I've seen 75 year old drunken grandmothers throw a better ass beating.

I am thoroughly enjoying that uber-liberal California is having all these problems. I guess the little darlings are unaware that the state is pretty much bankrupt and they have to raise tuition. Like all liberal socialist utopia, they all collapse under their own weight at some point.

Welcome to the suck, kids!

Well said. ..|

In the words of Margaret Thatcher, "the problem with socialism is that eventually you run out of other people's money."

I wouldn't be surprised if there were politicians on the left and right who were too busy lining their pockets instead of balancing the state budget. You can't put the blame on uber-liberal policies. The universities also have to balance their budgets. Any shortfall will be rolled over into the incoming fiscal year, and ultimately placed on the students.

Unfortunately higher education, and to an extend K-12 education, has become a business, and as with any business the bottom line is profit.

As of now, it's a joke. It's all fun and games; blaming one side against the other, haves vs have-nots, liberals vs conservative, et cetera. But the punchline will be on us. Today the fight is about providing affordable higher education for the next workforce. Tomorrow it will be about the large number of foreigners working here because our society is untrained/uneducated.

Please do you guys actually believe this drivel you are spouting....Admittedly Canada isnt the best or as good as it could be but we are able to keep tuition relatively low... I pay around 5 k a year in tuition at university for an undergrad... law and med school is around 15k i think.. And we have free healthcare.. and we are not broke.... There is something very wrong about the way your economy and politics work and protesting for change is the only real avenue open to you it seems

huh your using student protests to attack liberals and California as a whole? pretty far stretch if you ask me.

i guess if the students were protesting in some red-neck part of the country...oh wait they wouldnt be...thats why THEY are poor and stupid, they never think to THINK for themselves in the bible-belt.

America is bankrupt too in case you didn't notice, thanks to your conservatives agendas, and we have to raise taxes...yet when millionaires protest the cops dont show up to beat their asses...that is what is wrong with this society.

In the words of Margaret Thatcher, "the problem with socialism is that eventually you run out of other people's money."

What does that mean exactly? :p

If socialism existed as she envisioned, nobody would have more money than anyone else.

But im guessing that conservative broad was talking about socialism as if it were a 'problem' which raises another question..why would conservatives support socialism, only to use it themselves?

Maybe because her brand of 'socialism' was far more destructive, like a typical greedy ass monarch.

The American people are poorer than they have ever been, and the rich are richer than they have ever been.

If anyone is 'out of money' as Thatcher put it, its because the RICH took it all.

what argument are you trying to make?

do you just dislike protestors because you believe the status quo does not 'deserve' to be protested?

Well, I've posted a video of police attacking students with their batons The GOP side see no violence on behalf of the police. It doesn't matter if the protest is wrong in your views. Protests in any setting is a right in this country. Police are not to "Beat" the protesters. You are going in a wrong direction if you think it is ok. I posted the video because the violence hasn't stopped.

Nice, Jack. You enjoy economic distress and misery. Did you also enjoy the near complete economic collapse of the US economy caused by nearly 30 years of failed Republican/Conservative economic policy (followed even by Prez Clinton and Speaker Gingrich), and the kleptocracy of Wall Street?

Are you also enjoying Europe's economic distress. Probably not, they're implementing conservative economic policies, complete with budget cutting and austerity.

Aren't you a government worker? Are you writing your elected officials and encouraging them to slash your generous pension?

I enjoy seeing liberalism fail. The economic collapse in California has been wrought by one inept liberal hack after another spending and taxing as if there were no end to the
money they could confiscate. Well, the party seems to be about over, doesn't it?

People vote with their feet. California, since 1990, has lost 3.6 million people from it's population. Even illegal immigrants won't go to California any more. It used to be half of all illegals came to California, now it's 1 in 4. The state has $20 billion per year in red ink as far as they eye can see on a budget of $100 billion per year. They're pretty much doomed, like Greece.

http://www.newgeography.com/content/001925-if-california-is-doing-so-great-why-are-so-many-leaving

Now if these "protestors" want the benefit of a state sponsored education in California, they need to dig a bit deeper. Not picking up barricades and harassing the authorities unless they'd like to spend time in another state sponsored institution.

Ya know I don't make my threads on topic because I like where the jubbers can take it. You are going off on a direction I don't like. The topic is about police beating protesters. You say very, very little about the police's actions. Now I wish you would go on and discuss the police brutality. Thanks.

I'd love to except that I watched the video three times and there was no brutality. Nobody beaten to the ground. Nobody even sprayed or tasered. Does maintaining a skirmish line constitute brutality? When the protestors invade that space and they get repelled, is that what you consider brutality?

His anti-California agenda is apparent, even though it appears Governor Brown is one of the few governors in this country that can get things done and pass balanced budgets. Maybe Brown's administration should be an example for the rest of this country especially the BANKRUPT republican states.

I guess you don't read the local news. Your state budget isn't balanced. It's $13 billion short over the next 18 months.

http://www.mercurynews.com/california-budget/ci_19349483

That's what's causing tuition to rise and students to whine and complain and the police to to exactly brutalize them.

And please, honor the OP's request and address the topic.

classic ..|

this lie of a thread is based on BRUTALITY where there is no evidence

As a frequent visitor to California, it's a mess

the unions and state employees have driven it into the ground

funny thing is those retired unioners and state employees flee California as soon as they can

think Woody Allen's classic film ......."take the money and run"

shit show

awesome Jack

White Eagle - your thread topics just get less and less real every day my man

Students in the USA pay some of the highest tuition rates in any country, and have some of the most dismal job prospects after they are done.. And you think they should take this quietly and just accept... You think they are the ones who should suffer from mismanagement of previous budgets and political decisions.. when they probably couldnt even vote to influence most of the decisions that landed the state in that predicament

Good lord, stop being a Stalinist and become an American!

The article plainly said cops just started attacking students who were being peaceful. Then students tried to bring in a barrier to keep the police away, so the cops opened fire with rubber bullets.

Cookies and milk would be a better option than acting like hired goons.

California's problem is that a generation back, someone got the bright idea that sopme programs should be put off limits to politicians playing with them, so they made all kinds of things non-discretionary. Now most of the budget is set by law ahead of time, and can't be changed because the legislature doesn't have authority over it. I forget what it would take to actually get those numbers changed, but it would be worse than breaking a Senate filibuster.
