This is a Farcebook related question.

I know there are people who gathered hundreds and even thousands of 'friends in early days.

I keep my own list to less than 100 family members and friends and 'friends', removing people who never respond to posts because I assume they are gone or dead or something and only keep the people whose posts I really enjoy and follow because we have strong shared interests and outlooks.

How do any of you here screen FB acquaintances? Or do you care?

As with many others on here, I only accept Friend Requests from those I know and would have a conversation with if I saw them in person. Once is a great while I'll except and Friend of a Friend if I know who they are. I only have 92 friends and most of them are relatives. I used to have closer to 150, but for a handful of years I went thru and deleted those that I've never had a conversation with on FB or even remember them Liking a post.

I don't do Facebook, but I've been periodically active on Instagram for almost three years. I had stayed away, but when I agreed to do a book on my work, my editors told me a presence on Instagram would be useful in giving me a larger national and international presence and eventually lead to greater sales. (I have a Fall 2022 publication date. I was briefly in Milan in October to meet with the editors and visited the press in Bergamo where it will be printed.)

I've made 150 posts--relatively few pictures of my own work, but a lot of historical art and imagery I find interesting--and have about 5,000 "followers" (not fond of the term). It's been hugely rewarding, as I've "met" fellow design professionals, artists, artisans and many other interesting people around the world with shared interests in art and culture. Probably 40% are are French and Italian, so IG gives me the opportunity to correspond in those languages. Moreover, I've found people with whom I've collaborated on projects: a photographer, two architects and a graphic designer. And I've actually met (sans quotation marks) the aforementioned photographer, a local museum curator, a half a dozen architects passing through LA from other parts of the US and Europe, and next week I'm having lunch with members of a landscape design firm who are coming into town for a project. I've even picked up a house to design outside of Savannah.

I have had very little fame, and until recently have put very little effort into PR. A combination of shyness and arrogance, I suppose.

Re Instagram, I have been quite lucky in "meeting" and meeting the people I follow. I'm in awe of some of the talent out there which often exceeds my own.

Thank you for your kind words regarding the book. I doubt it will bring me much renown. I just want to present good work, and bring pleasure.

For me Facebook = cool animal videos. I love animal videos and FB knows it so they send me tons of them. I also follow a few obscure artists and older artists and Musicians I like - that is about it.

I never comment on politics or religion or anything else that is controversial because I don't want my comments to be part of my profile and get ads and suggestions based on my comments. I do like reading alot of the stuff from people on my friend list. I block anyone who likes donald trump so I don't have to read that crap.

Update:

Apparently as Facebook has decided to ease up on trash-talking the murderous thug Putin and his band of criminals....the Facebook Oversight Board reached out to me yesterday to ask for a defense statement about setting wax effigies on fire.

It was very therapeutic to put them on polite blast, to suggest that their bots who must do the banning should perhaps be taught context and the difference between animate beings and abstract concepts like a Filibuster or the desire to destroy every Putin statue on the planet.

But I did say, I regret nothing, don't care what they do with their oversight review because like a lot of other people, I can easily survive without offering my opinion about Putin or the flood of irrelevant advertising they want to push my way while still allowing thousands of fake troll accounts to spread misinformation and Russian propaganda.

I see that PutinCo. has deemed Meta a terrorist organization now. So that is a win-win.

Man... Facebook must be getting desperate for $$ as their stock plummets and people abandon them left and right. Just today, I bet I've blocked 50 ridiculous ads from my newsfeed and I think 75% of them are the same damn ad from different foreign sources with a fake front claiming "Allegations about Mayim Bialik". Geez...this is nuts. If they're trying to drive more people away, this is how to do it!

One thing I've noticed since getting the ban and having a zero response rate is that the numbers of ads for stupid clothes and other stupid things has plummeted.

So probably just clicking likes on some page is the trigger for getting this shit.

For a week or so before the most recent ban, I also was getting ads from a dozen 'different' companies that are for the same one Chinese t-shirt & sweat-shirt supplier. Ugh.

The ones that make me laugh though are the 'We Care About You' when they 'Think you might like to share this memory for four years ago'......Fuck them.
