I've lived in Charlotte for the most part since 04 and my favorite weird thing country people do is when someone says "Hi" or "What's up?" and they respond with "Aight" as if the person asked how they're doing. It's endlessly fascinating to me. I dated a guy who did this, no matter how you greeted him this was his reply.

That doesn't sound so strange to me. "Alright", similar to "aight", is pretty standard in the UK. If you were to go up to Yorkshire, you might be greeted with " 'ow do" or "now then". That's just how it is.

In Geordieland, you have to pronounce it as "Arreet" Saying it as "Alright" comes across as insincere.
Miners said "Arreet bonny lad" which was sweet but sadly there are not many miners left.

It seems reflexive, "Alright" is a response to a question such as "How are you doing?" or a command like "Have a nice day."

That's true. Alright is also used as an opening greeting, as in "Alright?", to which the response in Birmingham would be something like "not bad Bab".

It's also used to ask for permission to approach -- 'can you tolerate company?' LOL And precisely why I can't.

One might think that the Brits are the keepers of the English language, but no, far from it. Most of them should be profoundly ashamed.

Seattle is famous for its lack of congeniality. Any greeting is a sign that, "you ain't from around here".

I dunno. It's weird. I need to get back to the midwest ASAP. People are charming but I can understand fuck-all what anyone's saying.
