This woman quite trending in my local news- 2 days ago (she's from Spokane, WA)
Rachel-Dolezal-21.jpg

http://www.today.com/news/rachel-dolezal-speaks-today-show-matt-lauer-after-naacp-resignation-t26371
and perhaps her news spread to entire nation(s)

She sparked debate whether one could become "trans-racial" by choice..?

Do you think that's possible? Or somebody could explain that to me?

She has deliberately passed herself off as mixed race for her own ends
She has lied about her father being black to ingratiate herself with the 'downtrodden black community'
She has regular tanning sessions to darken her skin and has her naturally blond hair treated to make it look like Afro American corkscrews
The woman is a complete disgrace to herself and does her adopted community no favours at all

Oh please... didn't follow this story closely, but I'm sure everyone in the ethnic discussion business got everything they richly deserved from her.

Elizabeth Warren falsely claimed to have Native American ancestry. Among self loathing white liberals, claiming to be a minority becomes a path to power.

YAAAAWWWWNNNNNN… Among white (Pseudo-)Conservatives, wrongly claiming to be a member of a noble family was and is a path to power.

People often will claim whatever they think will make them more approachable, from looks and behavior, which is relatively common (the old saw about 'if you have to name yourself such then you probably aren't' hot, rich, dominant, whatever, to the much rarer claiming of minority status. Probably because minority status largely gets you nothing but grief. Doesn't just happen with race, either. There was one idiot I used to live with who asked to be called they instead of he, and I quote, 'because I don't want to receive cis privilege'. Tho I might've missed a word in there. None of us had the heart to tell him that isn't how privilege works. He wasn't a bad guy, just really naive. You don't lose it that way, particularly by pretending it doesn't exist.

Though he did have one hell of a stick up his ass about vegan being righteous, and I shan't touch on the ableism. Other than those things, nice enough.

And Ben, it isn't usually self loathing that makes people claim minority status. Usually it's either mental issues, greed or both.

It's my overwhelming experience that false minority status is claimed in situations where white Americans want to justify prejudiced viewpoints... "and it's okay, because I'm an x."

Eh, far from only white people and race. For that matter it's far from just white people doing it. Seems to be everybody, from what I can tell. I've also seen it happen with sexuality, ability and gender. Though not so many with gender as you'd think, and the latter were all online. (Foolish man example from earlier never actually claimed to be trans, he at least had that going. His honesty is bound to get him into trouble if it hasn't already). Where are your experiences located?

Usually when I see the 'and it's okay to say/do such and such about x because I'm x' it's from people who actually are x. Mostly from real life examples at that, drives me fucking nuts. It's like they don't realize or care that they're shooting themselves in the foot. Doesn't make their opinion not racist or homophobic or what have you, I'm just saying most of those people I've seen who say that I meet in real life, whereas people claiming to be x and doing good works for x's benefit generally aren't actively flinging hate speech and belittling the actual x's minority group.

Or rather, whenever I see the truth coming out, it always seems to be "and they've done such good works, can't believe they lied..." It's why I listed greed (getting what one feels they want or need while ignoring the cost to others) and/or mental issues. Mental issues isn't code for "it's okay" or "they're not responsible for their actions". Dunno if that's what you were thinking but when most ppl hear mental issues they jump right to the popular conception of non-responsibility.

Eh, far from only white people and race.

Yes, but that was the context we were discussing. And I do think it's incredibly more common for people to claim they're related to Pocahontas than to falsely claim they're gay or trans or bi.

Mental issues and non responsibility, **The supposition of which is a disability issue and not how we're actually treated. At least if you look at mental health + prison statistics and the out of sight, out of mind! certainly they can't be responsible for themselves, where-the-hell-is-their-aid shit that people deal with constantly. And of course, if no one is claiming responsibility for you in public there must not actually be anything wrong...

But yes, I'm tired of the able bodied willful delusion that having issues means there's a free pass when there aren't actually free passes given. Quite the opposite, I can only dream of some of the free passes abled people get.

Self loathing white liberals claim to be minority members, because is is a liberal dogma that whites are racist. Here is the dismal history of Elizabeth Warrenhttps://www.google.com/search?client=safari&rls=en&q=elizabethe+warren+native+american+ancestry&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8

Pocahontas, yes, but I think that's specifically due to romanticism plus racism that seems to be an English speaking phenomena. Altho it might also happen in Mexico, because same continent.

And the current context is race, but Ben typed crap and then you put 'x', which is a filler for minority-here. I also don't trust the casual dismissal of mental issues - which I thought rather blatant with her "my brother can't have a white parent." Crap. Not saying she's unawares that she lies like a rug, but you might be unpleasantly surprised at how...utterly ridiculous the brain is with both knowing the truth and it's unfortunate ability to convince itself into believing almost anything, often by accident. Rational thought doesn't play into it much.

I believe you can, but I know I'm in the minority along with many other topics and stigmas.

She to my knowledge grew up with black siblings and a somewhat black culture.

I take for example a black child that was adopted by a conservative white religious family. This happens a lot, and many white people are adopting black children more than black families. I can't speak for experience, both my parents are black.

Anyways, I would say that 95% of the time, the white family does not appreciate the black culture, and as an adult, the black child that was adopted begins to feel ashamed that they were not raised by a black family, or in a black household to where their cultures and values were experienced. So in a way, they were pretty much white, in a black body.

So back to Rachel Dolenzal situation, I would say that she is transracial. She seems to want nothing to do with her biological parents. She has done way more than what black or white people have done for civil rights. She married a black man, and has biracial children. So I would say she truly believes she's black.

I do however say that she needs to probably not identity as black or white. Just cultural.

I am Wesley Snipes and Samuel L. Jackson complexion, but there have been times to where I wanted to bleach my skin and be white, and die my hair blond. But I realized, no God made me this way for a reason. Even though I'm not religious per say, I feel if someone else is unhappy with their body, who am I to judge.

Now, if you said black instead of native then I'd disagree because I've seen at least as many people claim gay/bi or disability status as whitey claiming black when they weren't. Not talking about fudged lines or cultural interpretation, either, I mean outright, blatant lies.

The sheer level of the Indian princess ancestor, though, definitely a particularly cultural-western-centric bit of racism. Still kind of boggles, frankly. Well, some of my sisters qualify as native but that's not the same animal.

The only dismal here is you, Benvolio.
