I use Avast, it's another free one with very frequent updates.
Comodo Firewall is every bit as good as Zonealarm Pro and it is FREE!
Avast antivirus is great and is also FREE!
Both are much better than Norton IMO which costs $.$$ and is a Hogzilla that drastically slows down your system.
Spybot Search and Destroy and Adaware are also FREE adware and spyware scanners that work terrifically.
There is no point in buying something you can get for FREE!
Also if a virus scan does not clear up the rebooting problem this is a typical symptom of a failing power supply. I hope it's a virus though for your sake. That is easier to fix.

I was using McAfee anti-virus, spyware etc. that came free with Comcast broadband. If it ever caught anything, you couldn't prove it by me because it always came back with no messages of any kind. It was slowing down my computer so much, that I finally took it off. I'm currently looking for a replacement but haven't decided yet. Thanks for all the good leads!

Norton and McAfee are both pretty crappy and resource hogs compared to some other options. Avast, AVG, and AOL's Active Virus Shield (you don't have to use AOL to be able to use the program) are the best free options out there. I use AOL's rebranding of Kapersky in all the computers I maintain and like it more than AVG, just a little bit though. Nod32 as mentioned already is ALWAYS rated as the top AV program in every review of programs. I haven't ever used it, but if I was to pay for AV it would be for Nod32 and the people who use it absolutely love it. Its supposed to have a blazing fast scanning engine too.

I'll second dunno -Norton and McAfee suck balls -and not in a good way. I can't count the number of times I've removed one of those and installed AVG, only to have it immediately discover virii which the big boys had missed. Norton and McAfee will notably slow your computer down (as compared to AVG) and cause issues with other programs.
I take care of several hundred computers, and a few still have Norton or McAfee on them because the owner doesn't want to admit he got taken. Eventually they'll have problems and I'll get to rip that crap out and install AVG. I find it interesting that while virtually all my clients have dropped the big boys in favor of AVG, not a single one has ever dropped AVG to go to Norton or McAfee.

Ok - I was using Norton for years got sick of the resources being hogged and slowing down when norton was looking for updates etc. I bought zonelabs antivirus since I had the firewall already and liked it. no problems yet.
I use AOL/McAfee virus protection with good results. It has caught and isolated viruses, so I know it's working. It slows the computer only when it automatically downloads new files. This doesn't happen often enough to be a problem. I had ZoneAlarm firewall and it caused me all kinds of problems. My computer would freeze up and I couldn't uninstall the ZoneAlarm. I contacted the company and they told me to go into my computer and individually delete the ZoneAlarm files. Those that I couldn't delete, I had to rename.
you don't need AOL to run it.
trust me, NOTHING beats the kaspersky algorithms with it comes to antivirus.

I use AVAST which updates if not everyday, then every other day, or so it seems. Its unobtrusive and sits in your system tray spinning round when you click on a link, and scans incoming downloads such as mail automatically.

A very good program imho.
Another AVG fan here. 
I combine it with SpyBot, Adaware SE, SpywareBlaster and ZoneAlarm firewall (ALL free), use Firefox as my browser, keep my IE patches up to date (even tho' I rarely if ever use IE, I can't uninstall it) and I haven't had a problem in years.

Wow, that was pretty fast. i mean...i know you have something wrong, and maybe that's what pushed you to do it so fast. But i would have waited for a few more responses. Norton's is a resource hog, i didn't realize this until just this last year. I've had Norton's for probably 3-4 years so you may never notice it. I now use AVG since it's free and doesn't use as many resources as Norton's does. If you've already opened and installed Norton's there isn't much you can do about taking it back... so i just wish you luck with it.
