... said the gentleman on the phone to me earlier

Okay... so I was on the phone (story of my life!) and getting hassle from one of these loan companies (where do they get our phone numbers from?!).

Anyhow, the gentleman on the phone asked me if I would be kind enough to confirm my name. I did that. He went to call me Mr, but I stopped him in his tracks.

I advised him that my correct title is Lord (which it truthfully is) and there was an almighty "Yeeeeeeeeouch!" on the end of the phone.

I waited... there was a brief 10 second silence. Then... "Sorry, Sir... your representative will be back with you in a moment... for some reason he dropped a very hot coffee over himself" said a bemused woman, who I swear was trying not to laugh!

*giggles* well... it made my day anyway lol

Have you been keeping secret from us a wealthy inheritance, or a peerage, or a knighthood, or a title?

Sir ULOM of York would be impressed. ;)

Heheh.. I must confess, ChickenGuy.. I have indeed been keeping the title quiet.

Last time the title was mentioned (in my bank...) the poor cashier got in a state and could not stop blushing, hence me keeping it quiet! !oops!:D

Comes in handy though.

No inheritance, sadly :( lol

How do you become a lord?

I know there's a gay joke in here somewhere. But to me you'll always be Jim the window cleaner.

How did I become a Lord?

When my Father passed away, I invested in some land in Scotland. The title came with the land (not a small square bit!! LOL).

The rest went into my printing business.

To be honest, I only really use the title on official documents... otherwise I just drop the Lord bit and become plain old me again

You're a Lord and a Knight? That makes me titter for some reason.

You became a lord because you bought land? The UK is strange.

What probably happened was that the original Highland owners i.e. the 'regional' chief of the clan sept (division) ran out of money (or heirs) and sold off the title as well as the land.

In my own (VERY) extended family's case (you all know I'm Highland Scottish, right?) this would explain why the particular title of our clan sept (a baronetcy) suddenly left the family 50 years ago and ended up with a completely unrelated person in a completely different part of the country.

And no - I would never have inherited anything, because my great-grandfather was a youngest son. But my eldest male-line third-cousin had a coat of arms and lived in a large house in Dorset (his wife's home). I met him twice. He was VERY upper-class and posh.

I love it! lol. Crikey, ChickenGuy... I have only just realised you were from the Highlands! hahaha. Mind you, I do love it out there and hope to visit Scotland again real soon.

Could you understand him speak?

He was in his 70s and he spoke like very lah-de-dah toff-like English, what? what? utterly spiffing, old chap - you'd never guess in a million years that he was Scottish.

I'm sure he must have gone to private school and then went to university in Oxford or Cambridge - the only reason he was back up in Scotland was to go hunting and shooting.

I think he liked to 'put on a show' and be very grand and feel like he was above people. He was boastful, and full of his own self-importance, and acted very much like the lord of the manor. A very curious character.

I've known a couple of lads from Scotland over the years (wow... im making myself sound old here...)

One had an accent which was soft, pleasant spoken and easy to understand. The other lads accent was quite broad and I often had to ask him to repeat himself! Saying that though, they were the best friends I could ever have had.

One moved to New Zealand.. and the other passed away last year. The one in New Zealand keeps in touch with me via Skype, and the other will always be missed dearly.

Your Lordship, if I may be so bold as to inquire... what is your rank in the peerage?

I mean no impertinence, Lord, I assure you.
