Sure. Yeah. Right. Ignore the fact that Canada was built on the lowly beaver. Ignore the fact that most of Canada was once owned by North America's biggest and oldest company which was created and existed for centuries by the lowly beaver. Ignore the fact that global warming has set the polar bear on the road to extinction.

This woman is blissfully free from the wraths of intelligence.

OTTAWA - A Conservative senator says it's time Canada was symbolized by something more majestic than a buck-toothed rodent.

Sen. Nicole Eaton wants the polar bear to replace the beaver as an official emblem of Canada.

She says the polar bear is Canada's "most majestic and splendid mammal," and a powerful symbol in the lives of aboriginal peoples in the North.

She believes the furry white carnivore's "strength, courage, resourcefulness and dignity" is an appropriate symbol for modern-day Canada.

By contrast, she derides the lowly beaver as a "19th century has-been," a "dentally defective rat," a "toothy tyrant" and a nuisance that wreaks havoc on its environment.

Eaton acknowledges the beaver's involuntary role in founding Canada — as the fashionable pelts that fuelled the fur trade — but she says it's now time for a change.

Canada.

Still plenty of beaver.

I was wondering if she was going to flash her pelt in front of the Commons.

Replace the lovable beaver with a man-eater. Swell.

Image problems in the great white north?

Canada . Symbols . Historically our most common animal symbols are the beaver or the moose , and the worst thing you can say about moose is that during mating season they sometimes mistake small cars for female moose . Almost all other countries have carnivores and carrion eaters . And I was thinking , our flag , not a green maple leaf pulled off a tree , but a red one that fell off by itself when it was damned good and ready .

So this woman would prefer a bear on the edge of extinction due to climate change melting its habitat to a beaver that builds amazing environments as a matter of course? It is strange that she thinks beavers destroy their surrounds! So much modern research seems to clarify that it is in fact the other way around.

Beavers are lovely. The animal kind, that is.

The Conservative government is interested in appearing to care about the north while not actually having to follow through on all their election promises to build military bases up there, and pay for economic development up there, and formally assert sovereignty up there.

Probably they also figured out that doing all these things would require paying for "those scientists" to go up there and that only leads to trouble because we all know "those scientists" have some kind of crazy evidence-based global warming agenda that they always end up talking about whenever the north pole melts!

And if there is one thing the Harper government won't tolerate, it is caving in to special interest groups (like people interested in data and facts) when honest oilmen are trying to earn a living.

Thus, forget all that day-to-day northern stuff like science, development, the environment, and defence, and just ditch the beaver and replace it with something more northern!

And if the Conservative take on geography is any bit as good as their take on things like, say, the age of the universe, then I'm surprised they weren't proposing we take the penguin as our emblem.

(sorry if that sounds bitter. i was in calgary today. it has that effect.)

Let's see...

Beavers build dams and improve fish habitat.

Polar bears shit on the ice.

Beavers thin forests and improve general animal habitat.

Polar bears shit on the ice.

Beavers act as pioneers and rescue foundering ecosystems.

Polar bears shit on the ice.

Beavers filter streams and enhance water purity.

Polar bears shit on the ice.

I say put a beaver in every community, and put this Eaton dame on an ice floe with a polar bear -- maybe she can learn to shit on the ice.

i may be an american, but i have a great admiration for my neighbors to the north.
i see a strong neighbor not a weak one when i look to canada (and canadians). if the people of canada want to change to a bear, i will support them. i happen to like the beaver images.

Official response from the beavers:

We don't. Only one delusional senator wants to change it.

The polar bear really means nothing to most of Canada except that it is an animal which lives very far away.

I would be willing to bet that Mrs. Eaton doesn't even know that a polar bear's skin is black and its fur isn't white.

It would be better to get rid of the Queen. The beaver is kind of cute. You should also get rid of the sailboat on your 10 cent coin.
